The photo on the wall

시포는 아내와 함께 케이프타운에 살았다. 그는 마흔아홉 살이었고, 큰 학교의 교사였다.

Sipho lived in Cape Town with his wife. He was forty-nine, and he was a teacher at a big school.

매일 아침, 그는 테이블 마운틴 아래를 지나 차를 타고 출근했다. 그는 매일 산을 올려다보았다. 한 번도 올라가지 않았다.

Every morning, he drove to work under Table Mountain. He looked up at it every day. He never went up.

어느 일요일 저녁, 아내가 소파에서 그의 옆에 앉았다.

One Sunday evening, his wife sat down next to him on the sofa.

“당신 생일이 삼 주 남았어요.” 아내가 말했다. “이제 오십 세가 되네요. 뭐 하고 싶어요? 큰 파티 할까요?”

“Your birthday is in three weeks,” she said. “You’re going to be fifty. What would you like? A big party?”

“파티는 싫어.” 시포가 말했다. “테이블 마운틴에 걸어 올라가고 싶어.”

“No party,” said Sipho. “I’d like to walk up Table Mountain.”

아내가 웃었다. “당신이요? 당신은 길 끝에 있는 가게에도 차를 타고 가잖아요.”

His wife laughed. “You? You take the car to the shop at the end of the street.”

“알아. 하지만 꼭 하고 싶어. 옛 친구들과 함께.”

“I know. But I want to do it. With the old group.”

그는 벽에 걸린 사진을 보았다. 마른 소년 네 명이 큰 바위 위에 서 있었다. 그들 뒤에는 바다와 도시 전체가 있었다.

He looked at a photo on the wall. Four thin boys stood on a big rock. Behind them, there was the sea and the whole city.

1994년, 테이블 마운틴의 정상이었다. 소년들은 열여덟 살이었다. 그들은 그 주에 마지막 시험을 마쳤다. 다음 날, 그들은 산에 걸어 올라갔다.

It was the top of Table Mountain, in 1994. The boys were eighteen. They finished their last exam that week. The next day, they walked up the mountain.

“삼십이 년 전이야.” 시포가 말했다. “같은 사진을 찍고 싶어. 오십 살에, 같은 네 사람이.”

“Thirty-two years,” said Sipho. “I want the same photo. The same four people, at fifty.”

“그 친구들을 언제 마지막으로 봤어요?”

“When did you last see them?”

시포는 생각해 보았다. “오 년 전이야. 아마 육 년 전일 거야.”

Sipho thought about it. “Five years ago. Maybe six.”

“그럼 연락해 봐요.” 아내가 말했다. “오늘 밤에요.”

“Then write to them,” said his wife. “Tonight.”
