Bức ảnh trên tường
The photo on the wall
Sipho lived in Cape Town with his wife. He was forty-nine, and he was a teacher at a big school.
Mỗi sáng, anh lái xe đi làm dưới chân Núi Bàn. Ngày nào anh cũng ngước nhìn lên núi. Anh chưa bao giờ leo lên đó.
Every morning, he drove to work under Table Mountain. He looked up at it every day. He never went up.
Một buổi tối Chủ nhật, vợ anh ngồi xuống cạnh anh trên ghế sô pha.
One Sunday evening, his wife sat down next to him on the sofa.
“Your birthday is in three weeks,” she said. “You’re going to be fifty. What would you like? A big party?”
“Không tiệc tùng gì đâu,” Sipho nói. “Anh muốn đi bộ lên Núi Bàn.”
“No party,” said Sipho. “I’d like to walk up Table Mountain.”
Vợ anh cười. “Anh á? Đi ra cửa hàng ở cuối phố mà anh cũng lấy xe ô tô đi cơ mà.”
His wife laughed. “You? You take the car to the shop at the end of the street.”
“Anh biết. Nhưng anh muốn làm điều đó. Cùng nhóm bạn cũ.”
“I know. But I want to do it. With the old group.”
He looked at a photo on the wall. Four thin boys stood on a big rock. Behind them, there was the sea and the whole city.
It was the top of Table Mountain, in 1994. The boys were eighteen. They finished their last exam that week. The next day, they walked up the mountain.
“Thirty-two years,” said Sipho. “I want the same photo. The same four people, at fifty.”
“Lần cuối anh gặp họ là khi nào?”
“When did you last see them?”
Sipho suy nghĩ một lát. “Năm năm trước. Có thể là sáu năm.”
Sipho thought about it. “Five years ago. Maybe six.”
“Vậy thì nhắn tin cho họ đi,” vợ anh nói. “Tối nay luôn.”
“Then write to them,” said his wife. “Tonight.”
