Zdjęcie na ścianie
The photo on the wall
Sipho mieszkał w Kapsztadzie ze swoją żoną. Miał czterdzieści dziewięć lat i był nauczycielem w dużej szkole.
Sipho lived in Cape Town with his wife. He was forty-nine, and he was a teacher at a big school.
Każdego ranka jechał do pracy pod Górą Stołową. Codziennie na nią patrzył. Nigdy na nią nie wszedł.
Every morning, he drove to work under Table Mountain. He looked up at it every day. He never went up.
W pewien niedzielny wieczór jego żona usiadła obok niego na kanapie.
One Sunday evening, his wife sat down next to him on the sofa.
„Twoje urodziny są za trzy tygodnie” – powiedziała. – „Skończysz pięćdziesiąt lat. Co chciałbyś dostać? Dużą imprezę?”
“Your birthday is in three weeks,” she said. “You’re going to be fifty. What would you like? A big party?”
„Żadnej imprezy” – powiedział Sipho. – „Chciałbym wejść na Górę Stołową”.
“No party,” said Sipho. “I’d like to walk up Table Mountain.”
Jego żona zaśmiała się. „Ty? Do sklepu na końcu ulicy jeździsz samochodem”.
His wife laughed. “You? You take the car to the shop at the end of the street.”
„Wiem. Ale chcę to zrobić. Ze starą paczką”.
“I know. But I want to do it. With the old group.”
Spojrzał na zdjęcie na ścianie. Czterech szczupłych chłopców stało na wielkiej skale. Za nimi było morze i całe miasto.
He looked at a photo on the wall. Four thin boys stood on a big rock. Behind them, there was the sea and the whole city.
To był szczyt Góry Stołowej w 1994 roku. Chłopcy mieli po osiemnaście lat. W tamtym tygodniu skończyli ostatni egzamin. Następnego dnia weszli na górę.
It was the top of Table Mountain, in 1994. The boys were eighteen. They finished their last exam that week. The next day, they walked up the mountain.
„Trzydzieści dwa lata” – powiedział Sipho. – „Chcę mieć takie samo zdjęcie. Ci sami czterej ludzie w wieku pięćdziesięciu lat”.
“Thirty-two years,” said Sipho. “I want the same photo. The same four people, at fifty.”
„Kiedy widziałeś ich po raz ostatni?”
“When did you last see them?”
Sipho pomyślał o tym. „Pięć lat temu. Może sześć”.
Sipho thought about it. “Five years ago. Maybe six.”
„W takim razie napisz do nich” – powiedziała żona. – „Dziś wieczorem”.
“Then write to them,” said his wife. “Tonight.”
