Le premier ferry

The first ferry

Dimanche, six heures du matin. Le lac de Garde est gris et calme, et il y a du brouillard sur l’eau.

Sunday, six o’clock in the morning. The lake is grey and quiet, and there is mist on the water.

Je porte la grande valise noire de Sophie vers le port. Elle marche à côté de moi. Nous ne parlons pas.

I carry Sophie’s big black suitcase down to the pier. She walks next to me. We don’t talk.

Le ferry est déjà là. Un homme avec une chemise bleue prend la valise.

The ferry is already there. A man in a blue shirt takes the suitcase.

Sophie : « Voilà. C’est fini. Deux ans, et maintenant un ferry à six heures du matin. »

Sophie: So. That’s it. Two years, and now a ferry at six in the morning.

« Je suis désolé, Sophie », dis-je.

“I’m sorry, Sophie.”

Sophie : « Ne sois pas désolé. Je t’ai menti, Tom. Je le sais. Mais je te dis une chose comme ton avocate. C’est gratuit. »

Sophie: Don’t be. I lied to you, Tom. I know that. But let me tell you one thing as your lawyer. For free.

Sophie : « Vends la maison ou ne la vends pas. Mais décide-toi. Ne laisse pas les autres décider pour toi. Pas Marco, pas ta grand-mère et pas moi. »

Sophie: Sell it or don’t sell it. But decide. Don’t let other people decide for you. Not Marco, not your grandmother, and not me.

Elle monte sur le ferry. Elle ne regarde pas en arrière. Le ferry part lentement sur le lac, et après quelques minutes, il est juste un petit point blanc dans le brouillard.

She walks up onto the ferry. She doesn’t look back. The ferry moves slowly out onto the lake, and after a few minutes it is only a small white point in the mist.

Je reste longtemps sur le ponton. Puis je retourne à la villa. Dans le hall, il y a encore une valise.

I stand on the pier for a long time. Then I walk back up to the villa. There is one more suitcase in the hall.
