Feri Pertama

The first ferry

Minggu, pukul enam pagi. Danau tampak kelabu dan tenang, dan kabut menyelimuti air.

Sunday, six o’clock in the morning. The lake is grey and quiet, and there is mist on the water.

Aku membawa koper hitam besar milik Sophie turun ke pelabuhan. Dia berjalan di sampingku. Kami tidak berbicara.

I carry Sophie’s big black suitcase down to the pier. She walks next to me. We don’t talk.

Feri sudah tiba di sana. Seorang pria berkemeja biru mengambil koper itu.

The ferry is already there. A man in a blue shirt takes the suitcase.

Sophie: “Nah. Selesai sudah. Dua tahun, dan sekarang feri pada pukul enam pagi.”

Sophie: So. That’s it. Two years, and now a ferry at six in the morning.

“Aku minta maaf, Sophie.”

“I’m sorry, Sophie.”

Sophie: “Tidak perlu. Aku sudah membohongimu, Tom. Aku tahu itu. Tapi aku memberitahumu satu hal sebagai pengacaramu. Gratis.”

Sophie: Don’t be. I lied to you, Tom. I know that. But let me tell you one thing as your lawyer. For free.

Sophie: “Jual rumah itu atau jangan jual. Tapi buatlah keputusan. Jangan biarkan orang lain memutuskan untukmu. Bukan Marco, bukan nenekmu, dan bukan aku.”

Sophie: Sell it or don’t sell it. But decide. Don’t let other people decide for you. Not Marco, not your grandmother, and not me.

Dia melangkah masuk ke feri. Dia tidak menoleh ke belakang. Feri perlahan bergerak menjauh ke danau, dan setelah beberapa menit, kapal itu tinggal sebuah titik putih kecil di dalam kabut.

She walks up onto the ferry. She doesn’t look back. The ferry moves slowly out onto the lake, and after a few minutes it is only a small white point in the mist.

Aku berdiri lama di dermaga. Lalu aku kembali ke vila. Di aula masih ada sebuah koper.

I stand on the pier for a long time. Then I walk back up to the villa. There is one more suitcase in the hall.
