Walizka Eleny

Pierwszy prom

The first ferry

Niedziela, szósta rano. Jezioro Garda jest szare i ciche, a nad wodą unosi się mgła.

Sunday, six o’clock in the morning. The lake is grey and quiet, and there is mist on the water.

Niosę dużą czarną walizkę Sophie na dół do portu. Ona idzie obok mnie. Nie rozmawiamy.

I carry Sophie’s big black suitcase down to the pier. She walks next to me. We don’t talk.

Prom już tam jest. Mężczyzna w niebieskiej koszuli bierze walizkę.

The ferry is already there. A man in a blue shirt takes the suitcase.

Sophie: No to koniec. Dwa lata, a teraz prom o szóstej rano.

Sophie: So. That’s it. Two years, and now a ferry at six in the morning.

„Przykro mi, Sophie”.

“I’m sorry, Sophie.”

Sophie: Nie musi ci być przykro. Okłamałam cię, Tom. Wiem o tym. Ale powiem ci jedną rzecz jako twoja prawniczka. Za darmo.

Sophie: Don’t be. I lied to you, Tom. I know that. But let me tell you one thing as your lawyer. For free.

Sophie: Sprzedaj ten dom albo go nie sprzedawaj. Ale zdecyduj się. Nie pozwól, żeby inni decydowali za ciebie. Ani Marco, ani twoja babcia, ani ja.

Sophie: Sell it or don’t sell it. But decide. Don’t let other people decide for you. Not Marco, not your grandmother, and not me.

Wchodzi na prom. Nie ogląda się za siebie. Prom płynie powoli w głąb jeziora, a po kilku minutach jest już tylko małym białym punktem we mgle.

She walks up onto the ferry. She doesn’t look back. The ferry moves slowly out onto the lake, and after a few minutes it is only a small white point in the mist.

Stoję długo na pomoście. Potem wracam do willi. W holu stoi jeszcze jedna walizka.

I stand on the pier for a long time. Then I walk back up to the villa. There is one more suitcase in the hall.
