A primeira balsa

The first ferry

Domingo, seis horas da manhã. O lago está cinza e calmo, e tem névoa sobre a água.

Sunday, six o’clock in the morning. The lake is grey and quiet, and there is mist on the water.

Eu levo a mala preta e grande da Sophie até o porto. Ela caminha ao meu lado. Nós não conversamos.

I carry Sophie’s big black suitcase down to the pier. She walks next to me. We don’t talk.

A balsa já está lá. Um homem de camisa azul pega a mala.

The ferry is already there. A man in a blue shirt takes the suitcase.

Sophie: “Pronto. Acabou. Dois anos, e agora uma balsa às seis horas da manhã.”

Sophie: So. That’s it. Two years, and now a ferry at six in the morning.

“Sinto muito, Sophie.”

“I’m sorry, Sophie.”

Sophie: “Não precisa sentir. Eu menti para você, Tom. Eu sei disso. Mas vou dizer uma coisa como sua advogada. De graça.”

Sophie: Don’t be. I lied to you, Tom. I know that. But let me tell you one thing as your lawyer. For free.

Sophie: “Venda a casa ou não venda. Mas decida. Não deixe os outros decidirem por você. Nem o Marco, nem a sua avó e nem eu.”

Sophie: Sell it or don’t sell it. But decide. Don’t let other people decide for you. Not Marco, not your grandmother, and not me.

Ela entra na balsa. Ela não olha para trás. A balsa vai devagar para o meio do lago e, depois de alguns minutos, ela é só um pontinho branco na névoa.

She walks up onto the ferry. She doesn’t look back. The ferry moves slowly out onto the lake, and after a few minutes it is only a small white point in the mist.

Eu fico muito tempo no píer. Depois, volto para a Villa. No saguão, ainda tem outra mala.

I stand on the pier for a long time. Then I walk back up to the villa. There is one more suitcase in the hall.
