नन्हीं लाल टोपी

एक समय की बात है, एक प्यारी सी नन्हीं बच्ची थी जिसे जो कोई भी देखता, प्यार करने लगता था; पर सबसे ज़्यादा प्यार उसकी नानी करती थी, और ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं था जो वह उस बच्ची को न दे देती।

Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child.

एक बार उसने उसे लाल मखमल की एक छोटी टोपी दी, जो उस पर इतनी फबती थी कि वह उसके सिवा कुछ और पहनती ही नहीं थी; इसलिए सब उसे हमेशा ‘नन्हीं लाल टोपी’ कहकर पुकारते थे।

Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called ‘Little Red-Cap.’

एक दिन उसकी माँ ने उससे कहा: “आओ, नन्हीं लाल टोपी, यहाँ केक का एक टुकड़ा और दाखमधु की एक बोतल रखी है; इन्हें अपनी नानी के पास ले जाओ, वह बीमार और कमज़ोर हैं, और इनसे उन्हें आराम मिलेगा।

One day her mother said to her: ‘Come, Little Red-Cap, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, she is ill and weak, and they will do her good.

धूप तेज़ होने से पहले ही निकल पड़ो, और जब तुम जाओ, तो अच्छे से और चुपचाप चलना और रास्ते से इधर-उधर मत दौड़ना, नहीं तो तुम गिर पड़ोगी और बोतल टूट जाएगी, और फिर तुम्हारी नानी को कुछ नहीं मिलेगा; और जब तुम उनके कमरे में जाओ, तो ‘नमस्ते’ कहना मत भूलना, और ऐसा करने से पहले हर कोने में ताक-झाँक मत करना।”

Set out before it gets hot, and when you are going, walk nicely and quietly and do not run off the path, or you may fall and break the bottle, and then your grandmother will get nothing; and when you go into her room, don’t forget to say, “Good morning”, and don’t peep into every corner before you do it.’

“मैं पूरा ध्यान रखूँगी,” नन्हीं लाल टोपी ने अपनी माँ से कहा, और अपना हाथ उनके हाथ में देकर वादा किया।

‘I will take great care,’ said Little Red-Cap to her mother, and gave her hand on it.

नानी गाँव से आधी लीग दूर जंगल में रहती थी, और जैसे ही नन्हीं लाल टोपी ने जंगल में प्रवेश किया, उसे एक भेड़िया मिला। लाल टोपी को मालूम नहीं था कि वह कितना दुष्ट जीव था, और वह उससे ज़रा भी नहीं डरी।

The grandmother lived out in the wood, half a league from the village, and just as Little Red-Cap entered the wood, a wolf met her. Red-Cap did not know what a wicked creature he was, and was not at all afraid of him.

“नमस्ते, नन्हीं लाल टोपी,” उसने कहा।

‘Good day, Little Red-Cap,’ said he.

“बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद, भेड़िये।”

‘Thank you kindly, wolf.’

“इतनी सुबह कहाँ जा रही हो, नन्हीं लाल टोपी?”

‘Whither away so early, Little Red-Cap?’

“अपनी नानी के घर।”

‘To my grandmother’s.’

“तुम्हारी एप्रन में क्या है?”

‘What have you got in your apron?’

“केक और दाखमधु; कल पकाने का दिन था, इसलिए बेचारी बीमार नानी को कुछ अच्छा खाने को मिलेगा, ताकि उनमें ताक़त आ सके।”

‘Cake and wine; yesterday was baking-day, so poor sick grandmother is to have something good, to make her stronger.’

“तुम्हारी नानी कहाँ रहती हैं, नन्हीं लाल टोपी?”

‘Where does your grandmother live, Little Red-Cap?’

“जंगल में आगे अच्छी-खासी एक चौथाई लीग दूर; उनका घर तीन बड़े बलूत के पेड़ों के नीचे है, सुपारी के पेड़ ठीक नीचे ही हैं; तुम्हें ज़रूर पता होगा,” नन्हीं लाल टोपी ने उत्तर दिया।

‘A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak-trees, the nut-trees are just below; you surely must know it,’ replied Little Red-Cap.
