Mąka, woda, sól

Walter włącza światło. Potem włącza radio. Jest muzyka. „Umyj ręce” – mówi. Ana myje ręce.

Walter turns on the light. Then he turns on the radio. There is music. “Wash your hands,” he says. Ana washes her hands.

Na dużym stole jest duża miska. Walter kładzie mąkę do miski. „Mąka” – mówi. Potem wlewa wodę. „Woda. Ciepła, nie gorąca”. Potem trochę soli. „Sól. Niewiele”.

On the big table, there is a big bowl. Walter puts flour in the bowl. “Flour,” he says. Then he puts in water. “Water. Warm, not hot.” Then a little salt. “Salt. Not a lot.”

„Mąka, woda, sól” – mówi Ana. Bierze telefon. Chce pisać nowe słowa.

“Flour, water, salt,” Ana says. She takes her phone. She wants to write the new words.

„Nie telefon” – mówi Walter. „Ręce. Patrz”. Pcha ciasto dużymi rękami. Pcha, obraca, pcha, obraca.

“No phone,” Walter says. “Hands. Look.” He pushes the dough with his big hands. Push, turn, push, turn.

Ana próbuje. Ciasto jest na rękach. Jest na stole. Jest na jej swetrze. „Panie Walterze, to jest… to jest w każdym miejscu”.

Ana tries. The dough is on her hands. It is on the table. It is on her jumper. “Walter, it is… it is in every place.”

„Wszędzie” – mówi Walter. Nie śmieje się. „Jeszcze raz. Powoli”.

“Everywhere,” Walter says. He doesn’t laugh. “Again. Slowly.”

Pracują. Zegar na ścianie mówi: czwarta godzina. Ana robi małe bułki. Jej bułki nie są okrągłe. Bułki Waltera są takie same.

They work. The clock on the wall says four o’clock. Ana makes small rolls. Her rolls are not round. Walter’s rolls are all the same.

Ana bierze blachę z pieca. „Nie rękami! To jest gorące!” – mówi Walter. Ana kładzie blachę szybko. „Przepraszam. Przepraszam, przepraszam”.

Ana takes a tray from the oven. “Not with your hands! It’s hot!” Walter says. Ana puts the tray down fast. “Sorry. Sorry, sorry.”

„Nie przepraszaj. Użyj tego”. Daje jej gruby materiał.

“Don’t say sorry. Use this.” He gives her a thick cloth.

Potem Walter bierze duży bochenek z blachy. Jego ręce drżą. Bochenek upada na podłogę. Walter patrzy na ręce. Ana też patrzy na jego ręce.

Then Walter takes a big loaf from a tray. His hands shake. The loaf falls on the floor. Walter looks at his hands. Ana looks at his hands too.

„Nie patrz na mnie” – mówi. „Pracuj”.

“Don’t look at me,” he says. “Work.”

Ana milczy. Podnosi bochenek i kładzie go na stole.

Ana doesn’t say a word. She picks up the loaf and puts it on the table.

Za dziesięć piąta Walter idzie do sklepu. Ana słyszy dzwonek nad drzwiami. Ludzie wchodzą. Chcą chleb i bułki. Ana zostaje z tyłu przy piecu.

At ten to five, Walter goes to the front of the shop. Ana hears the bell over the door. People come in. They want bread and rolls. Ana stays at the back with the oven.

O szóstej dziewczyna schodzi po schodach. Jest wysoka, ma długie rude włosy. Ma duże słuchawki na szyi. „Tost, dziadku!” – mówi. Potem widzi Anę. „O. Ty jesteś nowa”.

At six o’clock, a girl comes down the stairs. She is tall, with long red hair. She has big headphones round her neck. “Toast, Grandad!” she says. Then she sees Ana. “Oh. You’re the new one.”
