Făină, apă, sare

Walter aprinde lumina. Apoi dă drumul la radio. Aici este muzică. „Spală-te pe mâini”, spune el. Ana se spală pe mâini.

Walter turns on the light. Then he turns on the radio. There is music. “Wash your hands,” he says. Ana washes her hands.

Pe masa mare este un castron mare. Walter pune făină în castron. „Făină”, spune el. Apoi pune apă. „Apă. Caldă, nu fierbinte.” Apoi puțină sare. „Sare. Nu multă.”

On the big table, there is a big bowl. Walter puts flour in the bowl. “Flour,” he says. Then he puts in water. “Water. Warm, not hot.” Then a little salt. “Salt. Not a lot.”

„Făină, apă, sare”, spune Ana. Ea își ia telefonul. Vrea să scrie cuvintele noi.

“Flour, water, salt,” Ana says. She takes her phone. She wants to write the new words.

„Fără telefon”, spune Walter. „Cu mâinile. Privește.” El împinge aluatul cu mâinile lui mari. Împinge, întoarce, împinge, întoarce.

“No phone,” Walter says. “Hands. Look.” He pushes the dough with his big hands. Push, turn, push, turn.

Ana încearcă. Aluatul este pe mâinile ei. Este pe masă. Este pe puloverul ei. „Walter, este… este în orice loc.”

Ana tries. The dough is on her hands. It is on the table. It is on her jumper. “Walter, it is… it is in every place.”

„Peste tot”, spune Walter. El nu râde. „Din nou. Încet.”

“Everywhere,” Walter says. He doesn’t laugh. “Again. Slowly.”

Ei lucrează. Ceasul de pe perete arată ora patru. Ana face chifle mici. Chiflele ei nu sunt rotunde. Chiflele lui Walter sunt toate la fel.

They work. The clock on the wall says four o’clock. Ana makes small rolls. Her rolls are not round. Walter’s rolls are all the same.

Ana ia o tavă din cuptor. „Nu cu mâinile! E fierbinte!”, spune Walter. Ana pune repede tava jos. „Îmi pare rău. Îmi pare rău, îmi pare rău.”

Ana takes a tray from the oven. “Not with your hands! It’s hot!” Walter says. Ana puts the tray down fast. “Sorry. Sorry, sorry.”

„Nu spune că îți pare rău. Folosește asta.” El îi dă o cârpă groasă.

“Don’t say sorry. Use this.” He gives her a thick cloth.

Apoi Walter ia o pâine mare de pe o tavă. Mâinile îi tremură. Pâinea cade pe podea. Walter se uită la mâinile lui. Și Ana se uită la mâinile lui.

Then Walter takes a big loaf from a tray. His hands shake. The loaf falls on the floor. Walter looks at his hands. Ana looks at his hands too.

„Nu te uita la mine”, spune el. „Lucrează.”

“Don’t look at me,” he says. “Work.”

Ana nu spune un cuvânt. Ea ridică pâinea și o pune pe masă.

Ana doesn’t say a word. She picks up the loaf and puts it on the table.

La cinci fără zece, Walter merge în fața magazinului. Ana aude clopoțelul de deasupra ușii. Oamenii intră. Vor pâine și chifle. Ana stă în spate, lângă cuptor.

At ten to five, Walter goes to the front of the shop. Ana hears the bell over the door. People come in. They want bread and rolls. Ana stays at the back with the oven.

La ora șase, o fată coboară scările. Este înaltă, cu păr lung și roșcat. Are căști mari la gât. „Pâine prăjită, Grandad!”, spune ea. Apoi o vede pe Ana. „O. Tu ești cea nouă.”

At six o’clock, a girl comes down the stairs. She is tall, with long red hair. She has big headphones round her neck. “Toast, Grandad!” she says. Then she sees Ana. “Oh. You’re the new one.”
