Ana turns. Walter is at the door to the shop. Fast, she puts the paper square in the pocket of her jeans.
Ana si gira. Walter è alla porta del negozio. Veloce, mette il quadrato di carta nella tasca dei suoi jeans.
“Nothing,” she says. “I want some air. It is very hot in here.”
«Niente», dice. «Voglio un po’ d’aria. Fa molto caldo qui dentro.»
Walter looks at her. Then he looks at the step. The step is empty. His face doesn’t move.
Walter la guarda. Poi guarda il gradino. Il gradino è vuoto. La sua faccia non si muove.
“Close that door,” he says. “And go to bed. You’re slow, but you’re not bad. Sleep now. Work is at three again.”
«Chiudi quella porta», dice lui. «E va’ a letto. Sei lenta, ma non sei male. Dormi adesso. Il lavoro è di nuovo alle tre.»
Ana closes the door. Not bad. From Walter, that is good. She goes upstairs and sleeps.
Ana chiude la porta. Non male. Da Walter, questo è buono. Va al piano di sopra e dorme.
At three in the afternoon, Ana’s alarm rings. She gets up. She has no milk in her room, and no money on her phone. She needs a phone card.
Alle tre del pomeriggio suona la sveglia di Ana. Si alza. Non ha latte nella sua stanza. Non ha soldi sul suo telefono. Ha bisogno di una scheda per il telefono.
Across the road, there is a small shop. Its name is over the door: SHAH’S. In the window, there are newspapers, sweets and a cat. The cat is asleep.
Dall’altra parte della strada c’è un piccolo negozio. Il suo nome è sopra la porta: SHAH’S. Nella vetrina ci sono giornali, dolci e una gatta. La gatta è addormentata.
Ana goes in. A small woman stands behind the counter. She has gold glasses and a pen behind her ear. “Hello, my dear!” she says. “You’re new. I know everybody, and I don’t know you.”
Ana entra. Una donna piccola è dietro il banco. Ha occhiali d’oro e una penna dietro l’orecchio. «Ciao, cara!» dice. «Sei nuova. Conosco tutti, e non conosco te.»
“Hello. Good afternoon. I’m Ana. I work at the bakery.”
«Salve. Buon pomeriggio. Sono Ana. Lavoro alla panetteria.»
“At Walter’s? The new night baker! I’m Priya. Priya Shah. This is my shop. Where are you from, Ana? How old are you? Have you got a family? Do you like it here?”
«Da Walter? La nuova panettiera di notte! Sono Priya. Priya Shah. Questo è il mio negozio. Di dove sei, Ana? Quanti anni hai? Hai una famiglia? Ti piace qui?»
Ana laughs. “Sorry. Slowly, please. One question.”
Ana fa una risata. «Scusa. Piano, per favore. Una domanda.»
“Sorry, my dear. One question. Where are you from?”
«Scusa, cara. Una domanda. Di dove sei?»
“From far away. Very far,” Ana says. “I am twenty-four. I have a brother. He is at home.”
«Da lontano. Molto lontano», dice Ana. «Ho ventiquattro anni. Ho un fratello. Lui è a casa.»
“That’s three questions. Good!” Priya says. “What can I get for you?”
«Sono tre domande. Bene!» dice Priya. «Cosa posso darti?»
