Ana odwraca się. Walter stoi w drzwiach do sklepu. Szybko wkłada papierowy kwadrat do kieszeni dżinsów.
Ana turns. Walter is at the door to the shop. Fast, she puts the paper square in the pocket of her jeans.
„Nic” — mówi. — „Chcę trochę powietrza. Tutaj jest bardzo ciepło”.
“Nothing,” she says. “I want some air. It is very hot in here.”
Walter patrzy na nią. Potem patrzy na stopień. Stopień jest pusty. Jego twarz się nie rusza.
Walter looks at her. Then he looks at the step. The step is empty. His face doesn’t move.
„Zamknij te drzwi” — mówi. — „I idź do łóżka. Jesteś powolna, ale nie jesteś zła. Śpij teraz. Praca jest znowu o trzeciej”.
“Close that door,” he says. “And go to bed. You’re slow, but you’re not bad. Sleep now. Work is at three again.”
Ana zamyka drzwi. Nieźle. Jak na Waltera, to dobrze. Idzie na górę i śpi.
Ana closes the door. Not bad. From Walter, that is good. She goes upstairs and sleeps.
O trzeciej po południu dzwoni budzik Any. Ana wstaje. Nie ma mleka w pokoju i nie ma pieniędzy na telefonie. Potrzebuje karty do telefonu.
At three in the afternoon, Ana’s alarm rings. She gets up. She has no milk in her room, and no money on her phone. She needs a phone card.
Po drugiej stronie ulicy jest mały sklep. Jego nazwa jest nad drzwiami: SHAH’S. W oknie są gazety, słodycze i kot. Kot śpi.
Across the road, there is a small shop. Its name is over the door: SHAH’S. In the window, there are newspapers, sweets and a cat. The cat is asleep.
Ana wchodzi. Mała kobieta stoi za ladą. Ma złote okulary i długopis za uchem. „Witaj, moja droga!” — mówi. — „Jesteś nowa. Znam wszystkich, a ciebie nie znam”.
Ana goes in. A small woman stands behind the counter. She has gold glasses and a pen behind her ear. “Hello, my dear!” she says. “You’re new. I know everybody, and I don’t know you.”
„Dzień dobry. Jestem Ana. Pracuję w piekarni”.
“Hello. Good afternoon. I’m Ana. I work at the bakery.”
„U Waltera? Nowa nocna piekarka! Jestem Priya. Priya Shah. To jest mój sklep. Skąd jesteś, Ano? Ile masz lat? Masz rodzinę? Podoba ci się tutaj?”
“At Walter’s? The new night baker! I’m Priya. Priya Shah. This is my shop. Where are you from, Ana? How old are you? Have you got a family? Do you like it here?”
Ana śmieje się. „Przepraszam. Wolno, proszę. Jedno pytanie”.
Ana laughs. “Sorry. Slowly, please. One question.”
„Przepraszam, moja droga. Jedno pytanie. Skąd jesteś?”
“Sorry, my dear. One question. Where are you from?”
„Z daleka. Bardzo daleko” — mówi Ana. — „Mam dwadzieścia cztery lata. Mam brata. On jest w domu”.
“From far away. Very far,” Ana says. “I am twenty-four. I have a brother. He is at home.”
„To są trzy pytania. Dobrze!” — mówi Priya. — „Co mogę dla ciebie zrobić?”
“That’s three questions. Good!” Priya says. “What can I get for you?”
