Ana dönüyor. Walter dükkânın kapısında duruyor. Ana kâğıt kareyi hızlıca kot pantolonunun cebine koyuyor.
Ana turns. Walter is at the door to the shop. Fast, she puts the paper square in the pocket of her jeans.
“Hiçbir şey,” diyor. “Biraz hava istiyorum. Burası çok sıcak.”
“Nothing,” she says. “I want some air. It is very hot in here.”
Walter ona bakıyor. Sonra basamağa bakıyor. Basamak boş. Yüzü kıpırdamıyor.
Walter looks at her. Then he looks at the step. The step is empty. His face doesn’t move.
“Şu kapıyı kapat,” diyor. “Ve yatağa git. Yavaşsın ama kötü değilsin. Şimdi uyu. İş yine üçte.”
“Close that door,” he says. “And go to bed. You’re slow, but you’re not bad. Sleep now. Work is at three again.”
Ana kapıyı kapatıyor. Kötü değil. Walter için bu iyi. Yukarı çıkıyor ve uyuyor.
Ana closes the door. Not bad. From Walter, that is good. She goes upstairs and sleeps.
Öğleden sonra üçte Ana’nın alarmı çalıyor. Kalkıyor. Odasında süt yok. Telefonunda para yok. Bir telefon kartı istiyor.
At three in the afternoon, Ana’s alarm rings. She gets up. She has no milk in her room, and no money on her phone. She needs a phone card.
Yolun karşısında küçük bir dükkân var. Adı kapının üstünde: SHAH’S. Vitrinde gazeteler, şekerler ve bir kedi var. Kedi uyuyor.
Across the road, there is a small shop. Its name is over the door: SHAH’S. In the window, there are newspapers, sweets and a cat. The cat is asleep.
Ana içeri giriyor. Tezgâhın arkasında küçük bir kadın duruyor. Kadının altın rengi gözlüğü var. Kulağının arkasında bir kalem var. “Merhaba canım!” diyor. “Yenisin. Ben herkesi tanıyorum ama seni tanımıyorum.”
Ana goes in. A small woman stands behind the counter. She has gold glasses and a pen behind her ear. “Hello, my dear!” she says. “You’re new. I know everybody, and I don’t know you.”
“Merhaba. Tünaydın. Ben Ana. Fırında çalışıyorum.”
“Hello. Good afternoon. I’m Ana. I work at the bakery.”
“Walter’ın yerinde mi? Yeni gece fırıncısı! Ben Priya. Priya Shah. Burası benim dükkânım. Nerelisin Ana? Kaç yaşındasın? Ailen var mı? Burayı sevdin mi?”
“At Walter’s? The new night baker! I’m Priya. Priya Shah. This is my shop. Where are you from, Ana? How old are you? Have you got a family? Do you like it here?”
Ana gülüyor. “Afedersiniz. Yavaşça lütfen. Bir soru.”
Ana laughs. “Sorry. Slowly, please. One question.”
“Afedersin canım. Bir soru. Nerelisin?”
“Sorry, my dear. One question. Where are you from?”
“Uzaklardan. Çok uzaklardan,” diyor Ana. “Yirmi dört yaşındayım. Bir erkek kardeşim var. O evde.”
“From far away. Very far,” Ana says. “I am twenty-four. I have a brother. He is at home.”
“Bu üç soru oldu. Güzel!” diyor Priya. “Sana ne vereyim?”
“That’s three questions. Good!” Priya says. “What can I get for you?”
