सड़क के उस पार वाली दुकान

अना मुड़ती है। वाल्टर दुकान के दरवाज़े पर है। वह जल्दी से अपनी जीन्स की जेब में कागज़ का चौकोर टुकड़ा रखती है।

Ana turns. Walter is at the door to the shop. Fast, she puts the paper square in the pocket of her jeans.

“कुछ नहीं,” वह कहती है। “मुझे थोड़ी हवा चाहिए। यहाँ बहुत गर्मी है।”

“Nothing,” she says. “I want some air. It is very hot in here.”

वाल्टर उसे देखता है। फिर वह सीढ़ी को देखता है। सीढ़ी खाली है। उसका चेहरा नहीं हिलता है।

Walter looks at her. Then he looks at the step. The step is empty. His face doesn’t move.

“वह दरवाज़ा बंद करो,” वह कहता है। “और सोने जाओ। तुम धीमी हो, लेकिन तुम बुरी नहीं हो। अब सो जाओ। काम फिर से तीन बजे है।”

“Close that door,” he says. “And go to bed. You’re slow, but you’re not bad. Sleep now. Work is at three again.”

अना दरवाज़ा बंद करती है। बुरी नहीं। वाल्टर की तरफ़ से, यह अच्छा है। वह ऊपर जाती है और सोती है।

Ana closes the door. Not bad. From Walter, that is good. She goes upstairs and sleeps.

दोपहर के तीन बजे, अना का अलार्म बजता है। वह उठती है। उसके कमरे में दूध नहीं है, और उसके फ़ोन में पैसे नहीं हैं। उसे एक फ़ोन कार्ड चाहिए।

At three in the afternoon, Ana’s alarm rings. She gets up. She has no milk in her room, and no money on her phone. She needs a phone card.

सड़क के उस पार, एक छोटी दुकान है। दरवाज़े के ऊपर उसका नाम है: शाह्स। खिड़की में, अख़बार, मिठाइयाँ और एक बिल्ली है। बिल्ली सो रही है।

Across the road, there is a small shop. Its name is over the door: SHAH’S. In the window, there are newspapers, sweets and a cat. The cat is asleep.

अना अंदर जाती है। काउंटर के पीछे एक छोटी महिला खड़ी है। उसके पास सोने का चश्मा है और उसके कान के पीछे एक पेन है। “नमस्ते, मेरी प्यारी!” वह कहती है। “तुम नई हो। मैं सबको जानती हूँ, और मैं तुम्हें नहीं जानती।”

Ana goes in. A small woman stands behind the counter. She has gold glasses and a pen behind her ear. “Hello, my dear!” she says. “You’re new. I know everybody, and I don’t know you.”

“नमस्ते। शुभ दोपहर। मैं अना हूँ। मैं बेकरी में काम करती हूँ।”

“Hello. Good afternoon. I’m Ana. I work at the bakery.”

“वाल्टर के यहाँ? नई रात वाली बेकर! मैं प्रिया हूँ। प्रिया शाह। यह मेरी दुकान है। अना, तुम कहाँ से हो? तुम कितने साल की हो? क्या तुम्हारा परिवार है? क्या तुम्हें यहाँ अच्छा लगता है?”

“At Walter’s? The new night baker! I’m Priya. Priya Shah. This is my shop. Where are you from, Ana? How old are you? Have you got a family? Do you like it here?”

अना हँसती है। “माफ़ कीजिए। कृपया धीरे-धीरे। एक सवाल।”

Ana laughs. “Sorry. Slowly, please. One question.”

“माफ़ करना, मेरी प्यारी। एक सवाल। तुम कहाँ से हो?”

“Sorry, my dear. One question. Where are you from?”

“बहुत दूर से। बहुत दूर,” अना कहती है। “मैं चौबीस साल की हूँ। मेरा एक भाई है। वह घर पर है।”

“From far away. Very far,” Ana says. “I am twenty-four. I have a brother. He is at home.”

“यह तीन सवाल हैं। अच्छा!” प्रिया कहती है। “मैं तुम्हारे लिए क्या लाऊँ?”

“That’s three questions. Good!” Priya says. “What can I get for you?”
