La puerta de atrás

Ana y Jess corren por Bridge Street. La lluvia es muy fuerte ahora. Tienen los zapatos mojados. Tienen el pelo mojado. La chaqueta nueva de Ana está mojada también.

Ana and Jess run down Bridge Street. The rain is very heavy now. Their shoes are wet. Their hair is wet. Ana’s new jacket is wet too.

En la panadería, hay agua en el suelo. Mucha agua. La puerta de atrás está abierta, y entran el viento y la lluvia. Walter está en la puerta. Empuja con sus manos grandes, pero no cierra.

In the bakery, there is water on the floor. A lot of water. The back door is open, and the wind and the rain come in. Walter is at the door. He pushes it with his big hands, but it doesn’t close.

«¡Abuelo! ¿Estás bien?», pregunta Jess.

“Grandad! Are you OK?” Jess asks.

«Estoy bien. La puerta no está bien. El viento la abre, y no cierra. La madera es vieja». Mira el agua. «La harina, Jess. La harina no puede mojarse».

“I’m fine. The door isn’t fine. The wind opens it, and it doesn’t close. The wood is old.” He looks at the water. “The flour, Jess. The flour can’t get wet.”

Jess y Ana llevan las bolsas de harina arriba. Pesan mucho. Luego Jess va a su habitación. Tiene deberes. Ana baja otra vez.

Jess and Ana carry the bags of flour upstairs. They are very heavy. Then Jess goes to her room. She has homework. Ana comes back down.

«Walter, puedo ayudar con la puerta», dice. «Mi padre tiene muchas herramientas. En casa, lo ayudo».

“Walter, I can help with the door,” she says. “My father has a lot of tools. At home, I help him.”

Walter la mira. Luego le da una caja pequeña. «Herramientas», dice. «Sujeta la puerta. Saco esta madera, y tú pones la nueva».

Walter looks at her. Then he gives her a small box. “Tools,” he says. “Hold the door. I take out this piece of wood, and you put in the new one.”

Trabajan durante una hora. La radio está puesta. Fuera, la lluvia no para. Las manos de Walter tiemblan, y Ana hace las cosas pequeñas. Walter hace las cosas pesadas.

They work for an hour. The radio is on. Outside, the rain doesn’t stop. Walter’s hands shake, so Ana does the small things. Walter does the heavy things.

Luego Walter habla. No mucho, pero más que los otros días.

Then Walter talks. Not a lot, but more than every other day.

«A mi mujer le gusta esta canción», dice. «Mary. A Mary le gustan todas las canciones viejas. Canta en la tienda, y los clientes cantan también».

“My wife likes this song,” he says. “Mary. Mary likes all the old songs. She sings in the shop, and the customers sing too.”

«¿Dónde está ahora?», pregunta Ana.

“Where is she now?” Ana asks.

«En el cementerio. Arriba en la colina. Veinte años ya». Está en silencio un momento. «El pan es fácil, Ana. Harina, agua, sal. Las familias no son fáciles».

“In the church yard. Up the hill. Twenty years now.” He is quiet for a moment. “Bread is easy, Ana. Flour, water, salt. Families are not easy.”

«Lo siento, Walter».

“I’m sorry, Walter.”

«¿Y tú? ¿Tu familia? ¿Por qué estás aquí, por la noche, bajo la lluvia, en Hollin Bridge?».

“And you? Your family? Why are you here, at night, in the rain, in Hollin Bridge?”
