Ana ve Jess, Bridge Street boyunca koşuyor. Yağmur şimdi çok sert yağıyor. Ayakkabıları ıslak. Saçları ıslak. Ana’nın yeni ceketi de ıslak.
Ana and Jess run down Bridge Street. The rain is very heavy now. Their shoes are wet. Their hair is wet. Ana’s new jacket is wet too.
Fırında yerde su var. Çok su var. Arka kapı açık. Rüzgâr ve yağmur içeri giriyor. Walter kapıda duruyor. Büyük elleriyle kapıyı itiyor ama kapı kapanmıyor.
In the bakery, there is water on the floor. A lot of water. The back door is open, and the wind and the rain come in. Walter is at the door. He pushes it with his big hands, but it doesn’t close.
“Dede! İyi misin?” diye Jess soruyor.
“Grandad! Are you OK?” Jess asks.
“İyiyim. Kapı iyi değil. Rüzgâr onu açıyor ve kapı kapanmıyor. Odun eski.” Suya bakıyor. “Un, Jess. Un ıslanamaz.”
“I’m fine. The door isn’t fine. The wind opens it, and it doesn’t close. The wood is old.” He looks at the water. “The flour, Jess. The flour can’t get wet.”
Jess ve Ana un çuvallarını üst kata taşıyor. Çuvallar çok ağır. Sonra Jess odasına gidiyor. Ödevi var. Ana tekrar aşağı iniyor.
Jess and Ana carry the bags of flour upstairs. They are very heavy. Then Jess goes to her room. She has homework. Ana comes back down.
“Walter, kapı için yardım edebilirim,” diyor. “Babamın çok aleti var. Evde ona yardım ediyorum.”
“Walter, I can help with the door,” she says. “My father has a lot of tools. At home, I help him.”
Walter ona bakıyor. Sonra ona küçük bir kutu veriyor. “Aletler,” diyor. “Kapıyı tut. Ben bu odun parçasını çıkarıyorum, sen de yenisini koyuyorsun.”
Walter looks at her. Then he gives her a small box. “Tools,” he says. “Hold the door. I take out this piece of wood, and you put in the new one.”
Bir saat çalışıyorlar. Radyo açık. Dışarıda yağmur durmuyor. Walter’ın elleri titriyor, bu yüzden Ana küçük işleri yapıyor. Walter ağır işleri yapıyor.
They work for an hour. The radio is on. Outside, the rain doesn’t stop. Walter’s hands shake, so Ana does the small things. Walter does the heavy things.
Sonra Walter konuşuyor. Çok değil ama diğer her günden daha fazla konuşuyor.
Then Walter talks. Not a lot, but more than every other day.
“Karım bu şarkıyı seviyor,” diyor. “Mary. Mary bütün eski şarkıları seviyor. Dükkânda şarkı söylüyor ve müşteriler de şarkı söylüyor.”
“My wife likes this song,” he says. “Mary. Mary likes all the old songs. She sings in the shop, and the customers sing too.”
“O şimdi nerede?” diye Ana soruyor.
“Where is she now?” Ana asks.
“Kilise bahçesinde. Tepede. Yirmi yıl oldu.” Bir süre sessiz kalıyor. “Ekmek kolay, Ana. Un, su, tuz. Aileler kolay değil.”
“In the church yard. Up the hill. Twenty years now.” He is quiet for a moment. “Bread is easy, Ana. Flour, water, salt. Families are not easy.”
“Üzgünüm, Walter.”
“I’m sorry, Walter.”
“Ya sen? Senin ailen? Neden buradasın, gece, yağmurda, Hollin Bridge’de?”
“And you? Your family? Why are you here, at night, in the rain, in Hollin Bridge?”
