마지막 독촉장

Daniel이 버스에서 뛰어내렸고, 아나는 Daniel을 따라 달렸다. 밤은 춥고 아주 조용했다. 둘은 빵집 뒤편 강가 길에서 멈췄다.

Daniel jumped down from the bus, and Ana ran after him. The night was cold and very quiet. They stopped on the river path, behind the bakery.

거기에는 아무도 없었다. 길은 왼쪽 운하와 오른쪽 다리로 이어졌고, 양쪽 다 어둡고 비어 있었다. 계단 위에 빵이 든 종이봉투만 있었다.

There was nobody there. The path went left to the canal and right to the bridge, and both ways were dark and empty. Only the paper bag was there, on the step, with the bread inside.

“어디로 갔지?” Daniel이 말했다. Daniel은 왼쪽과 오른쪽을 보았다. “여기 있었는데. 10초 전에. 내가 봤어.”

“Where did he go?” Daniel said. He looked left and right. “He was here. Ten seconds ago. I saw him.”

“Daniel. 누구를 봤어요? 불빛 속에서요. ‘저 사람은…’이라고 했잖아요.”

“Daniel. Who did you see? In the lights. You said: that’s…”

Daniel은 한참 동안 조용했다. 그러고는 고개를 저었다. “아무도 아니야. 잘 모르겠어. 잠깐 동안 생각했어… 모자랑 걸음걸이 때문이었어. 하지만 15년 전 일이야, 아나. 그리고 어두웠잖아.”

Daniel was quiet for a long time. Then he shook his head. “Nobody. I don’t know. For one second, I thought… It was the hat, and the way he walked. But it’s fifteen years, Ana. And it was dark.”

아나는 더는 속에 담아둘 수 없었다. “이름이 Mick이래요.” 아나가 말했다. “운하의 보트에서 살아요. 밤마다 빵을 가져가요. 맨체스터에서 왔다고 해요. Michael Bell은 모른다고 해요. 하지만 Michael처럼 봉투를 접어요. 그리고 빵을 만드는 법도 알아요.”

Ana couldn’t keep it inside any more. “His name is Mick,” she said. “He lives on a boat on the canal. He takes the bread every night. He says he’s from Manchester. He says he doesn’t know any Michael Bell. But he folds the bags, like Michael. And he knows how to make bread.”

Daniel은 오랫동안 아나를 바라보았다. 그들 뒤에서 버스가 문을 연 채 기다리고 있었다. 간호사는 기분이 좋지 않은 얼굴로 창밖을 내다보고 있었다.

Daniel looked at her for a long time. Behind them, the bus was waiting with its doors open. The nurse was looking out of the window, not happy.

“내 말 잘 들어, 아나.” Daniel이 조용히 말했다. “그 사람이 Michael이라 해도, Walter가 네 입으로 그 말을 들으면 안 돼. 너한테서도, 나한테서도 안 돼. 알겠어? 그건 Michael의 몫이야. 오직 Michael만이 저 문으로 들어올 수 있어.”

“Listen to me, Ana,” he said quietly. “If it is Michael, Walter mustn’t hear it from you. Not from you, not from me. Do you understand? That’s Michael’s job. Only Michael can walk through that door.”

“안 들어오면요?”

“And if he doesn’t?”

“그럼 안 들어오는 거지. 우리 일이 아니야.” Daniel은 버스로 걸어 돌아갔다. “나 늦겠어. 들어가. 춥다.”

“Then he doesn’t. It’s not our story.” He walked back to the bus. “I’m going to be late. Go inside. It’s cold.”

버스가 떠났다. 아나는 길에 혼자 서 있었다. 그러고 나서 뒷문을 열고 따뜻한 주방으로 들어갔다.

The bus drove away. Ana stood alone on the path. Then she opened the back door and went into the warm kitchen.

Walter는 오븐 앞에 있었다. 손에 큰 빵 쟁반을 들고 있었다. Walter는 문소리를 듣고 돌아섰다. “아나? 오늘 쉬는 밤이잖아. 뭘 하고—”

Walter was at the oven. He had a big tray of loaves in his hands. He turned round when he heard the door. “Ana? It’s your night off. What are you—”

그때 Walter의 손이 몹시 떨렸다. 뜨거운 쟁반이 떨어졌다. 바닥 온 사방에 빵이 흩어졌다. Walter는 쟁반을 잡으려고 손을 뻗었다가, 뜨거운 쇠를 만졌다.

Then his hands shook, very badly. The hot tray fell. The loaves went everywhere on the floor. Walter put out his hand to catch the tray, and his hand touched the hot metal.

Walter가 소리를 질렀다. Crumb가 짖었다. 아나는 Walter에게 달려가 팔을 잡았다. “찬물이요! 지금요!” 아나는 싱크대의 차가운 수도꼭지 아래로 Walter의 손을 대었다. Walter의 얼굴이 창백했다.

He shouted. Crumb barked. Ana ran to him and took his arm. “Cold water! Now!” She held his hand under the cold tap in the sink. Walter’s face was grey.
