Daniel otobüsten aşağı atladı ve Ana onun arkasından koştu. Gece soğuktu ve çok sessizdi. Fırının arkasındaki nehir yolunda durdular.
Daniel jumped down from the bus, and Ana ran after him. The night was cold and very quiet. They stopped on the river path, behind the bakery.
Orada kimse yoktu. Yol sola kanala ve sağa köprüye gidiyordu ve iki yön de karanlık ve boştu. Basamakta sadece içinde ekmek olan kâğıt torba vardı.
There was nobody there. The path went left to the canal and right to the bridge, and both ways were dark and empty. Only the paper bag was there, on the step, with the bread inside.
“Nereye gitti?” dedi Daniel. Sağa sola baktı. “Buradaydı. On saniye önce. Onu gördüm.”
“Where did he go?” Daniel said. He looked left and right. “He was here. Ten seconds ago. I saw him.”
“Daniel. Kimi gördün? Işıkların altında. Dedin ki: o…”
“Daniel. Who did you see? In the lights. You said: that’s…”
Daniel uzun süre sustu. Sonra başını salladı. “Hiç kimse. Bilmiyorum. Bir saniye için düşündüm ki… Şapkaydı ve yürüyüşüydü. Ama on beş yıl oldu, Ana. Ve hava karanlıktı.”
Daniel was quiet for a long time. Then he shook his head. “Nobody. I don’t know. For one second, I thought… It was the hat, and the way he walked. But it’s fifteen years, Ana. And it was dark.”
Ana artık bunu içinde tutamadı. “Onun adı Mick,” dedi. “Kanalda bir teknede yaşıyor. Her gece ekmeği o alıyor. Manchester’lı olduğunu söylüyor. Hiçbir Michael Bell’i tanımadığını söylüyor. Ama torbaları Michael gibi katlıyor. Ve ekmek yapmayı biliyor.”
Ana couldn’t keep it inside any more. “His name is Mick,” she said. “He lives on a boat on the canal. He takes the bread every night. He says he’s from Manchester. He says he doesn’t know any Michael Bell. But he folds the bags, like Michael. And he knows how to make bread.”
Daniel uzun süre ona baktı. Arkalarında otobüs kapıları açık bekliyordu. Hemşire mutsuz bir halde pencereden dışarı bakıyordu.
Daniel looked at her for a long time. Behind them, the bus was waiting with its doors open. The nurse was looking out of the window, not happy.
“Beni dinle, Ana,” dedi alçak sesle. “Eğer o Michael ise, Walter bunu senden duymamalı. Senden değil, benden değil. Anlıyor musun? Bu Michael’ın işi. O kapıdan içeri sadece Michael girebilir.”
“Listen to me, Ana,” he said quietly. “If it is Michael, Walter mustn’t hear it from you. Not from you, not from me. Do you understand? That’s Michael’s job. Only Michael can walk through that door.”
“Peki girmezse?”
“And if he doesn’t?”
“O zaman girmez. Bu bizim hikâyemiz değil.” Otobüse doğru geri yürüdü. “Geç kalacağım. İçeri gir. Hava soğuk.”
“Then he doesn’t. It’s not our story.” He walked back to the bus. “I’m going to be late. Go inside. It’s cold.”
Otobüs uzaklaştı. Ana yolda tek başına durdu. Sonra arka kapıyı açtı ve ılık mutfağa girdi.
The bus drove away. Ana stood alone on the path. Then she opened the back door and went into the warm kitchen.
Walter fırının yanındaydı. Ellerinde büyük bir somun ekmek tepsisi vardı. Kapıyı duyunca arkasını döndü. “Ana? Bu senin izin gecen. Sen ne—”
Walter was at the oven. He had a big tray of loaves in his hands. He turned round when he heard the door. “Ana? It’s your night off. What are you—”
Sonra elleri çok kötü titredi. Sıcak tepsi düştü. Somunlar yerde her yere saçıldı. Walter tepsiyi tutmak için elini uzattı ve eli sıcak metale değdi.
Then his hands shook, very badly. The hot tray fell. The loaves went everywhere on the floor. Walter put out his hand to catch the tray, and his hand touched the hot metal.
Bağırdı. Crumb havladı. Ana ona doğru koştu ve kolunu tuttu. “Soğuk su! Hemen!” Lavabodaki soğuk musluğun altında elini tuttu. Walter’ın yüzü griydi.
He shouted. Crumb barked. Ana ran to him and took his arm. “Cold water! Now!” She held his hand under the cold tap in the sink. Walter’s face was grey.
