एना ने नीचे आटे को देखा। वह वॉल्टर की तरफ़ नहीं देख सकी। “नहीं,” उसने कहा। “मैंने यह एक वीडियो में देखा था। अपने फ़ोन पर। फ्रांस में एक बेकर इसे ऐसे ही करता है।”

Ana looked down at the dough. She couldn’t look at Walter. “No,” she said. “I saw it on a video. On my phone. A baker in France does it like that.”

यह वॉल्टर से उसका दूसरा झूठ था। यह वाला पहले वाले से भी बड़ा था।

It was her second lie to Walter. This one was bigger than the first.

वॉल्टर ने बहुत देर तक उसे देखा। रेडियो बज रहा था। क्रम ओवन के पास अपनी नींद में हिला। फिर वॉल्टर अपनी कुर्सी पर पीछे होकर बैठ गया।

Walter looked at her for a long time. The radio played. Crumb moved in his sleep by the oven. Then Walter sat back in his chair.

“A video,” he said. “Of course. Everything is on the phone now.” He closed his eyes. “Put them in the oven. Twenty-five minutes.”

लेकिन उसने बहुत देर तक दोबारा आँखें नहीं खोलीं, और एना जानती थी कि उसने उसका यकीन नहीं किया।

But he didn’t open his eyes again for a long time, and Ana knew that he didn’t believe her.

दोपहर के दो बजे, एना नहर की तरफ़ चलकर गई। फिर से बारिश हो रही थी। वह लाल नाव या नीली नाव पर नहीं रुकी। वह सीधे ‘सेकंड चांस’ पर गई और उसने दरवाज़े पर ज़ोर से खटखटाया।

At two o’clock in the afternoon, Ana walked to the canal. It was raining again. She didn’t stop at the red boat or the blue boat. She went straight to the Second Chance and knocked hard on the door.

“Mick! I know you’re there. Please. I need to talk to you.”

After a minute, the door opened. Mick was wearing his old blue jumper. His eyes were red, and he looked like he didn’t sleep. “I start work in fourteen hours,” he said. “What do you want?”

एना अंदर नहीं गई। वह बारिश में रास्ते पर खड़ी रही। “पिछले हफ़्ते वॉल्टर का हाथ जल गया। वह अब ट्रे नहीं पकड़ सकता। उसके हाथ हर समय काँपते रहते हैं। डॉक्टर चाहते हैं कि वह जाँच के लिए अस्पताल जाए, और वह नहीं जा रहा।”

Ana didn’t go in. She stood on the path in the rain. “Walter burned his hand last week. He can’t hold a tray now. His hands shake all the time. The doctor wants him to go to the hospital for tests, and he won’t go.”

मिक का चेहरा शांत रहा। लेकिन उसका हाथ दरवाज़े को बहुत ज़ोर से पकड़े हुए था।

Mick’s face didn’t move. But his hand was holding the door very hard.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“क्योंकि मैंने पाव को वैसे ही घुमाया जैसे तुमने मुझे सिखाया था। आखिर में दो तेज़ घुमाव। और वॉल्टर ने यह देख लिया। उसने कहा कि पूरी दुनिया में सिर्फ़ एक ही इंसान पाव को ऐसे घुमाता है।”

“Because I turned a loaf the way you showed me. Two fast turns at the end. And Walter saw it. He said only one person in the world turns a loaf like that.”

एक पल के लिए, मिक ने अपनी आँखें बंद कर लीं। जब उसने आँखें खोलीं, तो वे सख्त और ठंडी थीं।

For a second, Mick closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were hard and cold.
