Ana s-a uitat în jos, la aluat. Nu putea să se uite la Walter. „Nu”, a spus ea. „Am văzut pe un video. Pe telefon. Un brutar din Franța face așa.”

Ana looked down at the dough. She couldn’t look at Walter. “No,” she said. “I saw it on a video. On my phone. A baker in France does it like that.”

A fost a doua ei minciună pentru Walter. Aceasta a fost mai mare decât prima.

It was her second lie to Walter. This one was bigger than the first.

Walter s-a uitat la ea mult timp. Radioul a cântat. Crumb s-a mișcat în somn lângă cuptor. Apoi Walter s-a așezat din nou pe scaun.

Walter looked at her for a long time. The radio played. Crumb moved in his sleep by the oven. Then Walter sat back in his chair.

„Un video”, a spus el. „Sigur că da. Totul este pe telefon acum.” A închis ochii. „Pune-le în cuptor. Douăzeci și cinci de minute.”

“A video,” he said. “Of course. Everything is on the phone now.” He closed his eyes. “Put them in the oven. Twenty-five minutes.”

Dar nu a deschis ochii din nou mult timp, și Ana a știut că el nu a crezut-o.

But he didn’t open his eyes again for a long time, and Ana knew that he didn’t believe her.

La ora două după-amiaza, Ana a mers la canal. A plouat din nou. Nu s-a oprit la barca roșie sau la barca albastră. A mers direct la Second Chance și a bătut tare la ușă.

At two o’clock in the afternoon, Ana walked to the canal. It was raining again. She didn’t stop at the red boat or the blue boat. She went straight to the Second Chance and knocked hard on the door.

“Mick! I know you’re there. Please. I need to talk to you.”

After a minute, the door opened. Mick was wearing his old blue jumper. His eyes were red, and he looked like he didn’t sleep. “I start work in fourteen hours,” he said. “What do you want?”

Ana nu a intrat. A stat pe cărare în ploaie. „Walter și-a ars mâna săptămâna trecută. Nu poate să țină o tavă acum. Mâinile îi tremură tot timpul. Doctorul vrea ca el să meargă la spital pentru teste, și el nu vrea să meargă.”

Ana didn’t go in. She stood on the path in the rain. “Walter burned his hand last week. He can’t hold a tray now. His hands shake all the time. The doctor wants him to go to the hospital for tests, and he won’t go.”

Fața lui Mick nu s-a mișcat. Dar mâna lui ținea ușa foarte strâns.

Mick’s face didn’t move. But his hand was holding the door very hard.

„Și azi-noapte”, a spus Ana, „a vorbit despre fiul lui. A spus: «Am un fiu, undeva. În fiecare zi mă gândesc, azi am să-l caut. Și în fiecare zi nu-l caut.»”

“And last night,” Ana said, “he talked about his son. He said: I have a son, somewhere. Every day I think, today I’m going to look for him. And every day I don’t.”

“Because I turned a loaf the way you showed me. Two fast turns at the end. And Walter saw it. He said only one person in the world turns a loaf like that.”

Pentru o secundă, Mick a închis ochii. Când i-a deschis, erau duri și reci.

For a second, Mick closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were hard and cold.
