Number Three

“I… I wanted to ask about the job,” Ana said. Her voice sounded thin and unsure, even to herself. “The one you mentioned in the café. If it’s still available.”

“Of course it is.” Helen sounded pleased but not surprised, as if Ana had simply arrived at the time she had been expected. “Can you meet me this afternoon? Three o’clock, at number three Bridge Street. I think it would be easier to explain if you could see what we’re planning.” She paused. “I’ll make sure the heating is on. Those old houses are freezing.”

“बिल्कुल उपलब्ध है।” हेलेन की आवाज़ में ख़ुशी थी पर कोई हैरानी नहीं, जैसे ऐना ठीक उसी समय आई हो जब उसकी उम्मीद की गई थी। “क्या तुम आज दोपहर मुझसे मिल सकती हो? तीन बजे, ब्रिज स्ट्रीट के नंबर तीन पर। अगर तुम देख लो कि हमारी योजना क्या है, तो समझाना आसान होगा।” वह ज़रा रुकी। “मैं हीटर चालू करवा दूँगी। वे पुराने घर बहुत ठंडे होते हैं।”

Number three, Bridge Street. Directly across the road from the bakery, three doors up from Shah’s. Ana closed her eyes after the call. Of all the places in the world, Helen had chosen the one where everybody she was trying to avoid could watch her walk in.

नंबर तीन, ब्रिज स्ट्रीट। बेकरी के बिल्कुल सामने सड़क के उस पार, शाह्स से तीन दरवाज़े आगे। बात खत्म होने के बाद ऐना ने अपनी आँखें बंद कर लीं। पूरी दुनिया में हेलेन ने वही एक जगह चुनी थी, जहाँ वे सभी लोग उसे अंदर जाते देख सकते थे जिनसे वह बचने की कोशिश कर रही थी।

Daniel was making toast when she told him. He stopped with the butter knife in the air. “Number three? You’re going to the enemy’s castle, in broad daylight, opposite the bakery?” Then he saw her face and put the knife down. “Sorry. Bad joke. You have to eat, Ana, and you have to pay rent somewhere. Nobody in this town has the right to judge you for listening to a job offer. Not even Priya.”

“Priya will judge me anyway,” Ana said.

“प्रिया फिर भी मुझे गलत समझेगी,” ऐना ने कहा।

“Probably,” Daniel agreed. “But she’ll feed you while she does it. That’s the kind of judging I can live with.”

“शायद,” डैनियल मान गया। “लेकिन वह ऐसा करते हुए भी तुम्हें खाना खिलाएगी। ऐसी डांट तो मैं खुशी-खुशी सह सकता हूँ।”

She went anyway. She walked down Bridge Street at five to three with her hood up and her eyes on the pavement, like a criminal returning to the scene. She did not look at the green door of the bakery. She did not look at Priya’s window, although she could feel Priya looking at her. She knocked on the door of number three, and it opened at once.

Inside, the house was empty and smelled of fresh paint and old stone. The Harrisons’ furniture had gone, and the walls were bare except for pale squares where pictures had once hung. Helen had turned the front room into a kind of office. There was a long table covered with drawings, two heaters glowing orange, and a coffee machine that looked more expensive than Daniel’s car.

अंदर से घर खाली था और उसमें ताज़े पेंट तथा पुराने पत्थरों की गंध आ रही थी। हैरिसन परिवार का फर्नीचर जा चुका था, और दीवारों पर सिर्फ वे हल्के निशान बाकी थे जहाँ कभी तस्वीरें लटकी थीं। हेलेन ने सामने वाले कमरे को एक दफ्तर जैसा बना दिया था। वहाँ एक लंबी मेज़ थी जो नक्शों से भरी थी, नारंगी चमकते दो हीटर थे, और एक ऐसी कॉफी मशीन थी जो डैनियल की गाड़ी से भी महँगी लगती थी।

In the middle of the table stood a model of Bridge Street, made of white card and clear plastic. Ana recognised the shape of the street at once: the slope down to the river, the old stone bridge at the bottom. But the houses were different. Where numbers three, five and seven now stood, there was one long, elegant building with large windows and a roof garden.

मेज़ के बीच में सफेद गत्ते और पारदर्शी प्लास्टिक से बना ब्रिज स्ट्रीट का एक मॉडल रखा था। ऐना ने उस सड़क का रूप तुरंत पहचान लिया: नदी की ओर ढलान और नीचे पुराना पत्थर का पुल। लेकिन घर अलग थे। जहाँ अब नंबर तीन, पाँच और सात खड़े थे, वहाँ बड़ी-बड़ी खिड़कियों और छत पर बने बगीचे वाली एक लंबी, सुंदर इमारत थी।

On the ground floor, facing the river, there was a café with tiny white chairs and tables, and a sign made of a single strip of plastic: BAKERY. Ana looked at it for a long time. It was where Walter’s oven stood now. It was where Michael had learned to bake, standing on a chair at seven years old.
