Terlalu terlambat
Too late
Diego tinggal di Buenos Aires. Umurnya tiga puluh enam tahun. Dia seorang pelayan di restoran yang besar dan sibuk.
Diego lives in Buenos Aires. He is thirty-six. He is a waiter in a big, busy restaurant.
Dia bekerja setiap malam, dari jam enam sampai jam satu pagi. Kakinya sakit. Punggungnya sakit.
He works every night, from six to one in the morning. His feet hurt. His back hurts.
Malam ini hari Jumat. Restoran itu penuh. Orang-orang makan daging dan minum anggur merah. Mereka berbicara dan tertawa.
It is Friday night. The restaurant is full. People eat meat and drink red wine. They talk and laugh.
“Diego! Meja sembilan mau membayar!” kata bos. “Dan meja empat mau satu botol anggur lagi!”
“Diego! Table nine wants to pay!” says the boss. “And table four wants another bottle of wine!”
“Ya, Pak,” kata Diego. Dia berlari ke meja sembilan. Dia berlari ke meja empat.
“Yes, boss,” says Diego. He runs to table nine. He runs to table four.
Di sudut, ada seorang pria dengan gitar. Dia bermain untuk orang-orang di meja-meja. Tidak ada yang mendengarkan dia.
In the corner, there is a man with a guitar. He plays for the people at the tables. Nobody listens to him.
Diego mendengarkan. “Bagus,” pikirnya. Dia selalu mendengarkan musiknya.
Diego listens. “Nice,” he thinks. He always listens to the music.
Diego punya gitar di rumah. Gitar itu ada di lemari di kamar tidurnya. Dia tidak pernah membuka lemari itu.
Diego has a guitar at home. It is in the cupboard in his bedroom. He never opens that cupboard.
Mimpi lamanya adalah musik. Tapi seorang pelayan tidak punya waktu untuk musik. Seorang pelayan punya meja-meja.
His old dream is music. But a waiter has no time for music. A waiter has tables.
“Diego! Mengapa kamu berdiri di sana? Meja dua mau kopi!”
“Diego! Why are you standing there? Table two wants coffee!”
“Maaf, Pak.”
“Sorry, boss.”
Seorang wanita di meja dua tersenyum kepada dia. “Anda kelihatan lelah,” katanya.
A woman at table two smiles at him. “You look tired,” she says.
“Saya selalu lelah,” kata Diego. “Dua kopi?”
“I am always tired,” says Diego. “Two coffees?”
