おそすぎます

Too late

ディエゴはブエノスアイレスに住んでいます。三十六才です。大きくていそがしいレストランのウェイターです。

Diego lives in Buenos Aires. He is thirty-six. He is a waiter in a big, busy restaurant.

毎晩働きます。夕方六時から夜中の一時までです。足がいたいです。背中もいたいです。

He works every night, from six to one in the morning. His feet hurt. His back hurts.

金曜日の夜です。レストランはお客さんでいっぱいです。みんな肉を食べて、赤ワインを飲みます。話して、笑います。

It is Friday night. The restaurant is full. People eat meat and drink red wine. They talk and laugh.

「ディエゴ！ 九番テーブルがお会計だよ！」と店長が言います。「それと四番テーブルにワインをもう一本！」

“Diego! Table nine wants to pay!” says the boss. “And table four wants another bottle of wine!”

「はい、店長」とディエゴは言います。九番テーブルへ走ります。四番テーブルへ走ります。

“Yes, boss,” says Diego. He runs to table nine. He runs to table four.

すみにギターを持った男の人がいます。テーブルのお客さんのためにひきます。でも、だれも聞きません。

In the corner, there is a man with a guitar. He plays for the people at the tables. Nobody listens to him.

ディエゴは聞きます。「いいな」と思います。いつも音楽を聞きます。

Diego listens. “Nice,” he thinks. He always listens to the music.

ディエゴの家にもギターがあります。ベッドルームの戸だなの中にあります。その戸だなはぜんぜん開けません。

Diego has a guitar at home. It is in the cupboard in his bedroom. He never opens that cupboard.

むかしの夢は音楽でした。でも、ウェイターに音楽の時間はありません。ウェイターにはテーブルがあります。

His old dream is music. But a waiter has no time for music. A waiter has tables.

「ディエゴ！ どうしてそこに立っているんだ？ 二番テーブルがコーヒーを待っているぞ！」

“Diego! Why are you standing there? Table two wants coffee!”

「すみません、店長」

“Sorry, boss.”

二番テーブルの女の人がディエゴにほほえみます。「つかれているみたいね」と彼女は言います。

A woman at table two smiles at him. “You look tired,” she says.

「いつもつかれています」とディエゴは言います。「コーヒーは二つですか？」

“I am always tired,” says Diego. “Two coffees?”
