First Stories

Short Japanese stories for children, and for anyone taking their very first steps in Japanese, with a translation beside every paragraph. A cat who is nowhere to be found, a dog who will not have a bath, a wobbly tooth, a snowman for a grandmother in bed: small everyday problems, solved by the end, with a laugh on the way.

The Japanese is at A1, the very first level. Every story is told in the present tense, in short sentences, with the same everyday words coming back again and again. No past tenses and no long clauses: nothing a beginner has not met yet.

Read them with a child, read them aloud together, or read them on your own as a first real story in Japanese. Each one takes about ten minutes.
