It is seven o’clock in the morning. Mrs Berg stands at the stairs.

“This is your job,” she says. “All of them. Use hot water.”

“How many stairs are there?”

“Tonight your hands can say.”

It is eight o’clock. Nina is cleaning stair twenty.

It is ten o’clock. Nina is cleaning stair fifty.

This hotel is small, but it has very many stairs.

Max comes in. There is snow in his hair.

He walks up the clean stairs. Now they are not clean.

He sits on stair ten.

Mrs Berg comes out from behind her desk.

She looks at Max. Max looks at Mrs Berg.

Nina stops working. She knows this. Sara and Max do this every day.

Sara always stops first.
