Ravi tenía diecinueve años y era su primera semana. Trabajaba en Bombay como repartidor de fiambreras.

Ravi was nineteen years old, and it was his first week. He worked in Mumbai as a lunch carrier.

Cada mañana las mujeres de la ciudad cocinaban la comida y la metían en cajas de metal. Ravi y los otros hombres recogían las cajas y las ponían en cajas de madera. Luego iban en tren a las oficinas. A la una y media cada persona tenía su comida caliente en la mesa.

Every morning the women of the city cooked lunch and packed it into metal boxes. Ravi and the other men collected the boxes and put them into wooden crates. Then they went to the offices by train. At half past twelve everyone had their warm food on the table.

En cada tapa había una marca: letras, números y un punto de color. Ravi todavía no conocía bien las marcas. Pero los hombres las leían como un libro, y así cada caja llegó a la casa correcta.

On every lid there was a mark: letters, numbers and a coloured dot. Ravi did not know the marks well yet. But the men read them like a book, and so every box reached the right building.

El tío Suresh era el jefe del grupo. Tenía cincuenta y cinco años y en veinte años nunca perdió una caja. «La persona que trabaja una semana entera sin errores va a tener su propia ruta», le dijo a Ravi. «Tienes un día más.»

Uncle Suresh was the head of the group. He was fifty-five years old and had never lost a box in twenty years. “Whoever works a whole week without a mistake gets their own route,” he said to Ravi. “You have one day left.”
