Ravi tinha dezenove anos e aquela era a sua primeira semana. Ele trabalhou como entregador de comida em Mumbai.

Ravi was nineteen years old, and it was his first week. He worked in Mumbai as a lunch carrier.

Toda manhã, as mulheres da cidade cozinhavam o almoço e colocavam a comida em marmitas de metal. Ravi e os outros homens pegavam as marmitas e colocavam tudo em caixas de madeira. Depois, eles iam de trem até os escritórios. Ao meio-dia e meia, todo mundo tinha a sua comida quente na mesa.

Every morning the women of the city cooked lunch and packed it into metal boxes. Ravi and the other men collected the boxes and put them into wooden crates. Then they went to the offices by train. At half past twelve everyone had their warm food on the table.

Em cada tampa tinha um código: letras, números e um ponto colorido. Ravi ainda não conhecia bem os códigos. Mas os homens liam os códigos como um livro, e assim cada marmita chegava ao prédio certo.

On every lid there was a mark: letters, numbers and a coloured dot. Ravi did not know the marks well yet. But the men read them like a book, and so every box reached the right building.

O tio Suresh era o chefe do grupo. Ele tinha cinquenta e cinco anos e nunca perdeu uma marmita em vinte anos. “Quem trabalhar uma semana inteira sem erros vai ter a sua própria rota”, ele disse para Ravi. “Você ainda tem um dia.”

Uncle Suresh was the head of the group. He was fifty-five years old and had never lost a box in twenty years. “Whoever works a whole week without a mistake gets their own route,” he said to Ravi. “You have one day left.”
