하늘의 물고기

말리크는 일곱 살이다. 말리크는 엄마, 아빠, 여동생 사라와 함께 에사우이라에서 산다. 에사우이라는 모로코의 도시다. 그 도시는 바닷가에 있다. 사라는 다섯 살이다.

Malik is seven years old. He lives with Mum, Dad and his sister Sara in Essaouira. Essaouira is a town in Morocco. The town is by the sea. Sara is five.

에사우이라에는 바람이 많이 분다. 바람은 항상 분다. 바람은 강하고 조금 차갑다. “우리 도시는 바람의 도시야.” 아빠가 말한다.

There is a lot of wind in Essaouira. The wind is always there. It is strong and a little cold. “Our town is the town of the wind,” says Dad.

오늘은 토요일이다. 말리크에게 새 연이 있다. 그 연은 유수프 삼촌의 선물이다. 연은 빨갛고 물고기처럼 생겼다. 큰 노란 눈 두 개와 긴 꼬리가 있다.

Today is Saturday. Malik has a new kite. The kite is a present from Uncle Yusuf. It is red and looks like a fish. It has two big yellow eyes and a long tail.

유수프 삼촌은 아빠의 형이다. 삼촌은 어부다. 삼촌에게 파란 배가 있다. 삼촌은 매일 배를 타고 바다로 간다.

Uncle Yusuf is Dad’s brother. He is a fisherman. He has a blue boat. Every day he goes out to sea in the boat.

아빠, 말리크, 사라는 해변으로 간다. 해변은 길고 노랗다. 하지만 오늘 이상한 일이 있다. 바람이 없다. 바람이 전혀 없다!

Dad, Malik and Sara go to the beach. The beach is long and yellow. But today something is strange. There is no wind. No wind at all!

“바람이 없어?” 아빠가 묻는다. “에사우이라에서? 그럴 리가 없어!”

“No wind?” asks Dad. “In Essaouira? That can’t be!”

말리크는 연을 높이 든다. 말리크는 달린다. 빠르게 달린다. 물고기가 조금 난다. 그리고 모래 위로 떨어진다. 털썩.

Malik holds the kite up. He runs. He runs fast. The fish flies a little. Then it falls into the sand. Plop.

말리크는 한 번 더 해 본다. 그리고 한 번 더 해 본다. 털썩. 털썩. 물고기는 모래 위에 있다.

Malik tries again. And again. Plop. Plop. The fish lies in the sand.

사라가 웃는다. “말리크, 물고기는 안 날아. 물고기는 헤엄쳐!”

Sara laughs. “Malik, fish don’t fly. Fish swim!”

“이제 내가 달려 볼게.” 아빠가 말한다. 아빠는 연을 받는다. 아빠는 아주 빠르게 달린다. 아빠는 키가 아주 크고 다리가 길다. 그리고 아빠가 넘어진다. 아빠는 모래 위에 눕는다. 물고기는 아빠 위에 있다.

“Now I’ll run,” says Dad. Dad takes the kite. He runs very fast. He is very tall, and his legs are long. Then he falls over. Dad lies in the sand. The fish lies on Dad.

이제 말리크도 웃는다. 아빠 머리에 모래가 있고 코에도 모래가 있다. “좋아.” 아빠가 말한다. “우리는 기다려. 바람이 꼭 올 거야.”

Now Malik laughs too. Dad has sand in his hair and sand in his nose. “Fine,” says Dad. “We’ll wait. The wind is sure to come.”

그들은 모래에 앉아서 빵과 오렌지를 먹는다. 그들은 오래 기다린다.

They sit in the sand and eat bread and oranges. They wait a long time.
