Malik tem sete anos. Ele mora com a mãe, o pai e a irmã Sara em Essaouira. Essaouira é uma cidade no Marrocos. A cidade fica perto do mar. Sara tem cinco anos.
Malik is seven years old. He lives with Mum, Dad and his sister Sara in Essaouira. Essaouira is a town in Morocco. The town is by the sea. Sara is five.
Em Essaouira tem muito vento. O vento está sempre lá. Ele é forte e um pouco frio. “A nossa cidade é a cidade do vento”, diz o papai.
There is a lot of wind in Essaouira. The wind is always there. It is strong and a little cold. “Our town is the town of the wind,” says Dad.
Hoje é sábado. Malik tem uma pipa nova. A pipa é um presente do tio Yusuf. Ela é vermelha e parece um peixe. Ela tem dois olhos amarelos grandes e um rabo comprido.
Today is Saturday. Malik has a new kite. The kite is a present from Uncle Yusuf. It is red and looks like a fish. It has two big yellow eyes and a long tail.
O tio Yusuf é o irmão do papai. Ele é pescador. Ele tem um barco azul. Todo dia ele vai para o mar com o barco.
Uncle Yusuf is Dad’s brother. He is a fisherman. He has a blue boat. Every day he goes out to sea in the boat.
O papai, o Malik e a Sara vão para a praia. A praia é comprida e amarela. Mas hoje tem uma coisa estranha. Não tem vento. Nada de vento!
Dad, Malik and Sara go to the beach. The beach is long and yellow. But today something is strange. There is no wind. No wind at all!
“Sem vento?”, pergunta o papai. “Em Essaouira? Isso não existe!”
“No wind?” asks Dad. “In Essaouira? That can’t be!”
Malik levanta a pipa. Ele corre. Ele corre rápido. O peixe voa um pouco. Depois ele cai na areia. Plop.
Malik holds the kite up. He runs. He runs fast. The fish flies a little. Then it falls into the sand. Plop.
Malik tenta de novo. E mais uma vez. Plop. Plop. O peixe fica na areia.
Malik tries again. And again. Plop. Plop. The fish lies in the sand.
Sara ri. “Malik, peixes não voam. Peixes nadam!”
Sara laughs. “Malik, fish don’t fly. Fish swim!”
“Agora eu corro”, diz o papai. O papai pega a pipa. Ele corre muito rápido. Ele é muito alto, e as pernas dele são compridas. Depois ele cai. O papai fica na areia. O peixe fica em cima do papai.
“Now I’ll run,” says Dad. Dad takes the kite. He runs very fast. He is very tall, and his legs are long. Then he falls over. Dad lies in the sand. The fish lies on Dad.
Agora o Malik ri também. O papai tem areia no cabelo e areia no nariz. “Tudo bem”, diz o papai. “A gente espera. O vento com certeza vem.”
Now Malik laughs too. Dad has sand in his hair and sand in his nose. “Fine,” says Dad. “We’ll wait. The wind is sure to come.”
Eles sentam na areia e comem pão e laranjas. Eles esperam bastante tempo.
They sit in the sand and eat bread and oranges. They wait a long time.
