Le lendemain matin, deux hommes du village montent sur le toit. Ils secouent souvent la tête.

The next morning, two men from the village climb onto the roof. They shake their heads a lot.

Sophie me trouve dans le jardin. Elle porte encore son blazer blanc, et elle a de nouveaux papiers dans la main.

Sophie finds me in the garden. She is wearing her white blazer again, and she has new papers in her hand.

Sophie : Marco a fait une nouvelle offre. Deux millions et demi. À cause du toit.

Sophie: Marco has made a new offer. Two and a half million. Because of the roof.

« Deux millions et demi ? Il y a trois jours, c’était quatre ! »

“Two and a half? Three days ago it was four!”

Sophie : Il y a trois jours, le toit n’était pas cassé. Sois réaliste, Tom. C’est toujours beaucoup d’argent.

Sophie: Three days ago, the roof was not broken. Be realistic, Tom. It’s still a lot of money.

« Tu as été avec lui toute la nuit, Sophie. Tu es l’avocate de qui ? La mienne ou la sienne ? »

“You were with him all night, Sophie. Whose lawyer are you? Mine or his?”

Son visage devient blanc. Pendant une seconde, elle a l’air effrayée. Puis elle redevient froide.

Her face goes white. For a second she looks afraid. Then she is cool again.

Sophie : Je fais comme si tu n’avais pas dit ça.

Sophie: I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.

Elle retourne dans la maison. Ses talons claquent sur les pierres comme une horloge.

She walks back into the house. Her heels click on the stones like a clock.
