Quả đào dưới sông
The Peach in the River
Ngày xửa ngày xưa, có một ông lão và một bà lão sống ở Nhật Bản. Họ nghèo và không có con.
Long, long ago, an old man and an old woman lived in Japan. They were poor, and they had no children.
Một buổi sáng, ông lão lên đồi cắt cỏ. Bà lão mang quần áo ra sông giặt.
One morning the old man went to the hills to cut grass. The old woman took the clothes to the river.
Bỗng nhiên, bà nhìn thấy một vật rất to trôi dưới nước. Đó là một quả đào, quả đào to nhất trần đời! Quả đào trôi chầm chậm xuôi dòng sông, dập dềnh, dập dềnh, dập dềnh.
Suddenly she saw something big in the water. It was a peach, the biggest peach in the world! It came down the river slowly, bump, bump, bump.
“Quả đào mới tuyệt làm sao!” bà lão nói. “Mình sẽ mang nó về nhà cho chồng mình.”
“What a wonderful peach!” said the old woman. “I’m going to take it home for my husband.”
Bà cố vươn tay ra với, nhưng nó ở quá xa. Vì vậy, bà vỗ tay và hát một bài hát ngắn.
She tried to reach it, but it was too far away. So she clapped her hands and sang a little song.
“Nước xa thì đắng, nước gần thì ngọt. Mau lại đây với dòng nước ngọt nào, quả đào nhỏ ơi!”
“Far water is bitter, near water is sweet. Come to the sweet water, little peach!”
Và quả đào trôi mỗi lúc một gần hơn. Cuối cùng, nó dừng lại ngay trước mặt bà. Bà vớt quả đào lên rồi vội vã về nhà.
And the peach came closer and closer. At last it stopped in front of her. She picked it up and hurried home.
Buổi tối, ông lão đi làm về.
In the evening the old man came home.
“Ông nó ơi, vào đây nhanh lên!” bà lão nói. “Tôi có một món quà cho ông này.”
“Husband, come quickly!” said the old woman. “I have a present for you.”
Bà đưa quả đào cho ông xem, mắt ông mở to ngạc nhiên. “Tôi chưa từng thấy quả đào nào như thế này!” ông nói. “Bà mua nó ở đâu thế?”
She showed him the peach, and his eyes grew wide. “I have never seen a peach like this!” he said. “Where did you buy it?”
“Tôi không mua đâu. Tôi nhặt được nó ở dưới sông đấy.”
“I didn’t buy it. I found it in the river.”
“Thế thì chúng ta ăn ngay thôi. Tôi đang đói bụng lắm rồi.”
“Then let’s eat it now. I’m very hungry.”
Ông lão cầm lấy một con dao. Nhưng trước khi ông kịp cắt, quả đào đã tự tách đôi ra.
The old man took a knife. But before he could cut it, the peach opened by itself.
