模型
The Model
Helen Fenwick had not intended to come back to Bridge Street at four in the morning. She had intended to sleep in her flat in Leeds, in the clean white bed with the view of the river that she had paid a great deal of money for, and to drive to Hollin Bridge at nine like a reasonable person. Instead she had lain awake until half past two, and then got up, and dressed, and driven forty minutes through the empty dark, and let herself into an old house that smelled of paint and somebody else’s life.
She did not turn on the heaters. She stood at the window of the front room in her coat with her arms folded and looked across the road. The bakery’s window was the only lit thing in the street, a warm yellow rectangle in the stone, and in it, every so often, a figure crossed: a tall man with a grey beard, a small young woman with short black hair, carrying trays, bending, laughing at something. She could not hear them. She did not need to.
Behind her, on the long table, the model of the new Bridge Street glowed faintly white in the light from the street. Twenty-two flats. A roof garden. The café on the ground floor with its tiny white chairs, where the oven now stood. She had paid an architect in Leeds eleven thousand pounds for that model, and she had been proud of it, and she still believed in every square metre of it. That was the problem. Belief, in her experience, was a great deal less comfortable than doubt.
A bus went past, slowly, the night bus, with its lights blazing and nobody inside but the driver. It slowed almost to a stop in front of the house, and for a second she thought it had come for her. Then it went on down to the bridge and turned the corner, and the street was dark again except for the bakery.
Her father had stood at a window like this one. Not this one; the window of the terraced house behind the mill, two rooms up and two down, where the car park was now. After the mill closed, Frank Pickering had stood at that window every morning at six, in his work clothes, out of habit, watching the gates that no longer opened. Then he had sat down in the chair beside it, and he had more or less stayed in that chair for fifteen years.
Fifteen years. She noticed the number and was irritated by it. It seemed to be the unit in which this town measured everything: grief, silence, guilt, the length of time a man could sit in a chair or put a loaf on a step before somebody came. She had built her whole life on the conviction that she would never be one of the people who waited fifteen years for anything.
The bakery had been one of the few places he went. Mary Bell had let him sit at the little table in the corner by the shop window for whole mornings with a single cup of tea, refilled without being asked, and had never once let him pay. Helen, at twelve and thirteen, had been sent to fetch him home for his dinner, and had stood in the doorway in her school uniform, ashamed of him and ashamed of being ashamed, and Mary had put a currant bun into her hand every single time without a word.
She had not thought about that bun for thirty years. She had made a point of not thinking about it. And then Michael Bell, of all people, had stood across a counter from her with flour on his hands and reminded her, quite gently, in the voice of a man stating a fact rather than playing a card. She had not slept properly since.
It was not, she told herself, that she had changed her mind. Her mind was a well-made thing and did not change because of currant buns. The town needed young families and it needed money and it needed buildings that people wanted to live in, and a bakery that could not survive without a campaign of jam jars was, by definition, a bakery that could not survive. All of that was still true at four in the morning. It was simply that it was no longer the only thing that was true.
On Saturday morning, because she could not stay away and could not admit why, she walked along the canal. She told herself she was looking at the narrowboats as a market: who lived on them, what they would pay for a mooring with a view of new flats. In fact she walked until she came to the dark green boat with the pale stripe along its side, and stopped behind a tree, and watched.
Michael Bell was painting the side of his boat. Beside him, holding a second brush with the awkward reluctance of a teenager who has been made to tidy his room, was a tall ginger boy in an orange football shirt whom Helen recognised, after a moment, as the son of Dennis Dobson from the hardware shop, who had signed her petition in favour of the flats with a flourish and told her the Bells had always been trouble.
They did not talk much. The boy painted badly and then, as the morning went on, rather less badly. Michael showed him once how to hold the brush and then left him alone. At eleven, a woman in a woolly hat came out of the blue boat next door with three mugs of tea, gave one to each of them and kept the third for herself, and stood watching them with her arms folded, like a foreman. By noon the stripe had gone, and the Second Chance was one colour again, if you did not look too closely.
Helen walked back along the canal before either of them saw her. She did not know what she had expected to see, or why she felt as though she had been shown something that was not meant for her. That afternoon, when she let herself into number three again, there was an envelope on the mat.
