अमीर टोरंटो में बस चलाता था। वह बयालीस साल का था, और वह ईरान से आया था। वह अपने बेटे, डैनियल के साथ एक छोटे फ़्लैट में रहता था।
Amir drove a bus in Toronto. He was forty-two, and he came from Iran. He lived with his son, Daniel, in a small flat.
वे सिर्फ़ दो लोग थे। अमीर देर तक काम करता था, लेकिन वह रात के खाने से पहले हमेशा घर आ जाता था।
It was only the two of them. Amir worked long hours, but he always came home before dinner.
फ़रवरी की एक शाम, वह रसोई की मेज़ पर बारह कार्ड लेकर बैठा।
One evening in February, he sat at the kitchen table with twelve cards.
“डैनियल, यहाँ आओ,” उसने कहा। “तुम्हारा जन्मदिन दो हफ़्तों में है। तुम दस साल के हो जाओगे!”
“Daniel, come here,” he said. “Your birthday is in two weeks. You will be ten!”
डैनियल अपने कमरे से बाहर आया। वह बड़ी काली आँखों वाला एक शांत लड़का था। “मुझे पता है, बाबा।”
Daniel came out of his room. He was a quiet boy with big dark eyes. “I know, Baba.”
“तो हम एक दावत करेंगे। स्कूल के तुम्हारे दोस्तों के साथ एक असली दावत। देखो, मैंने निमंत्रण खरीदे।”
“So we’re going to have a party. A real party, with your friends from school. Look, I bought invitations.”
कार्डों पर नीले गुब्बारे बने थे। अमीर ने पहला कार्ड खोला और लिखना शुरू किया।
The cards had blue balloons on them. Amir opened the first one and started to write.
“प्रिय दोस्त, कृपया डैनियल के दसवें जन्मदिन की दावत में आओ! शनिवार, 7 मार्च, दो बजे से पाँच बजे तक।”
“Dear friend, please come to Daniel’s tenth birthday party! Saturday, 7 March, from two until five.”
“कहाँ: हमारा घर, 15 वेस्टन रोड, फ़्लैट 12। पिज़्ज़ा, केक और खेल होंगे। कृपया अमीर को जवाब दें।”
“Where: our home, 15 Weston Road, flat 12. There will be pizza, cake and games. Please reply to Amir.”
उसने नीचे अपना फ़ोन नंबर लिखा। फिर उसने डैनियल की तरफ़ देखा। “तुम किसे बुलाना चाहते हो?”
He wrote his phone number at the bottom. Then he looked at Daniel. “Who do you want to invite?”
डैनियल ने तुरंत जवाब नहीं दिया। “मुझे नहीं पता। शायद किसी को नहीं।”
Daniel didn’t answer at once. “I don’t know. Maybe nobody.”
“किसी को नहीं? तुम्हारी फ़ुटबॉल टीम के लड़कों के बारे में क्या? तुम हर समय उनके बारे में बात करते हो।”
“Nobody? What about the boys on your football team? You talk about them all the time.”
“ठीक है। फ़ुटबॉल टीम। और मेरी कक्षा की कुछ लड़कियाँ।”
“OK. The football team. And some girls from my class.”
