Twaalf uitnodigingen
Twelve invitations
Amir reed bus in Toronto.
Amir drove a bus in Toronto. He was forty-two, and he came from Iran. He lived with his son, Daniel, in a small flat.
It was only the two of them. Amir worked long hours, but he always came home before dinner.
One evening in February, he sat at the kitchen table with twelve cards.
“Daniel, kom hier,” zei hij. “Je verjaardag is over twee weken. Je wordt tien!”
“Daniel, come here,” he said. “Your birthday is in two weeks. You will be ten!”
Daniel came out of his room. He was a quiet boy with big dark eyes. “I know, Baba.”
“Dus we gaan een feestje vieren. Een echt feestje, met je vrienden van school. Kijk, ik heb uitnodigingen gekocht.”
“So we’re going to have a party. A real party, with your friends from school. Look, I bought invitations.”
The cards had blue balloons on them. Amir opened the first one and started to write.
“Lieve vriend, kom alsjeblieft naar Daniels tiende verjaardagsfeest! Zaterdag 7 maart, van twee tot vijf.”
“Dear friend, please come to Daniel’s tenth birthday party! Saturday, 7 March, from two until five.”
“Waar: bij ons thuis, Weston Road 15, flat 12. Er komen pizza, taart en spelletjes. Antwoord alsjeblieft aan Amir.”
“Where: our home, 15 Weston Road, flat 12. There will be pizza, cake and games. Please reply to Amir.”
Hij heeft zijn telefoonnummer onderaan geschreven. Daarna heeft hij naar Daniel gekeken. “Wie wil je uitnodigen?”
He wrote his phone number at the bottom. Then he looked at Daniel. “Who do you want to invite?”
Daniel heeft niet meteen geantwoord. “Ik weet het niet. Misschien niemand.”
Daniel didn’t answer at once. “I don’t know. Maybe nobody.”
“Niemand? En de jongens van je voetbalteam dan? Je praat de hele tijd over hen.”
“Nobody? What about the boys on your football team? You talk about them all the time.”
“Oké. Het voetbalteam. En een paar meisjes uit mijn klas.”
“OK. The football team. And some girls from my class.”
