열두 장의 초대장

Twelve invitations

아미르는 토론토에서 버스를 운전했다. 그는 마흔두 살이었고, 이란에서 왔다. 그는 작은 아파트에서 아들 다니엘과 살았다.

Amir drove a bus in Toronto. He was forty-two, and he came from Iran. He lived with his son, Daniel, in a small flat.

두 사람뿐이었다. 아미르는 오랜 시간 일했지만, 저녁 식사 전에는 항상 집에 왔다.

It was only the two of them. Amir worked long hours, but he always came home before dinner.

2월의 어느 날 저녁, 그는 카드 열두 장을 들고 식탁에 앉았다.

One evening in February, he sat at the kitchen table with twelve cards.

“다니엘, 이리 와 봐,” 그가 말했다. “2주 뒤면 네 생일이야. 이제 열 살이 되네!”

“Daniel, come here,” he said. “Your birthday is in two weeks. You will be ten!”

다니엘이 방에서 나왔다. 다니엘은 크고 어두운 눈을 가진 조용한 아이였다. “알아요, 바바.”

Daniel came out of his room. He was a quiet boy with big dark eyes. “I know, Baba.”

“그래서 파티를 하려고 해. 진짜 파티야, 학교 친구들이랑 함께. 봐, 초대장을 샀어.”

“So we’re going to have a party. A real party, with your friends from school. Look, I bought invitations.”

카드에는 파란 풍선들이 있었다. 아미르는 첫 번째 카드를 열고 쓰기 시작했다.

The cards had blue balloons on them. Amir opened the first one and started to write.

“친애하는 친구에게, 다니엘의 열 번째 생일 파티에 와 주세요! 3월 7일 토요일, 두 시부터 다섯 시까지.”

“Dear friend, please come to Daniel’s tenth birthday party! Saturday, 7 March, from two until five.”

“장소: 우리 집, 웨스턴 로드 15번지, 12호. 피자와 케이크와 게임이 있습니다. 아미르에게 답장해 주세요.”

“Where: our home, 15 Weston Road, flat 12. There will be pizza, cake and games. Please reply to Amir.”

그는 아래에 전화번호를 썼다. 그러고 나서 다니엘을 보았다. “누구를 초대하고 싶니?”

He wrote his phone number at the bottom. Then he looked at Daniel. “Who do you want to invite?”

다니엘은 곧바로 대답하지 않았다. “모르겠어요. 어쩌면 아무도요.”

Daniel didn’t answer at once. “I don’t know. Maybe nobody.”

“아무도 없다고? 축구 팀 친구들은 어때? 항상 그 친구들 이야기를 하잖아.”

“Nobody? What about the boys on your football team? You talk about them all the time.”

“좋아요. 축구 팀이요. 그리고 우리 반 여자아이 몇 명도요.”

“OK. The football team. And some girls from my class.”
