On iki davetiye
Twelve invitations
Amir Toronto’da otobüs şoförlüğü yapıyordu. Kırk iki yaşındaydı ve İranlıydı. Oğlu Daniel ile küçük bir dairede yaşıyordu.
Amir drove a bus in Toronto. He was forty-two, and he came from Iran. He lived with his son, Daniel, in a small flat.
Sadece ikisi vardı. Amir uzun saatler çalıştı, ama akşam yemeğinden önce her zaman eve geldi.
It was only the two of them. Amir worked long hours, but he always came home before dinner.
Şubat ayında bir akşam, mutfak masasında on iki kartla oturdu.
One evening in February, he sat at the kitchen table with twelve cards.
“Daniel, buraya gel,” dedi. “Doğum günün iki hafta sonra. On yaşına gireceksin!”
“Daniel, come here,” he said. “Your birthday is in two weeks. You will be ten!”
Daniel odasından çıktı. Büyük koyu gözlü, sessiz bir çocuktu. “Biliyorum, Baba.”
Daniel came out of his room. He was a quiet boy with big dark eyes. “I know, Baba.”
“Bu yüzden bir parti yapacağız. Okuldaki arkadaşlarınla gerçek bir parti. Bak, davetiyeler aldım.”
“So we’re going to have a party. A real party, with your friends from school. Look, I bought invitations.”
Kartların üzerinde mavi balonlar vardı. Amir ilk kartı açtı ve yazmaya başladı.
The cards had blue balloons on them. Amir opened the first one and started to write.
“Sevgili arkadaşım, lütfen Daniel’ın onuncu yaş günü partisine gel! 7 Mart Cumartesi, saat ikiden beşe kadar.”
“Dear friend, please come to Daniel’s tenth birthday party! Saturday, 7 March, from two until five.”
“Yer: evimiz, 15 Weston Road, daire 12. Pizza, pasta ve oyunlar olacak. Lütfen Amir’e cevap verin.”
“Where: our home, 15 Weston Road, flat 12. There will be pizza, cake and games. Please reply to Amir.”
En alta telefon numarasını yazdı. Sonra Daniel’a baktı. “Kimi davet etmek istiyorsun?”
He wrote his phone number at the bottom. Then he looked at Daniel. “Who do you want to invite?”
Daniel hemen cevap vermedi. “Bilmiyorum. Belki hiç kimseyi.”
Daniel didn’t answer at once. “I don’t know. Maybe nobody.”
“Hiç kimseyi mi? Futbol takımındaki çocuklar nasıl? Onlardan her zaman bahsediyorsun.”
“Nobody? What about the boys on your football team? You talk about them all the time.”
“Tamam. Futbol takımı. Bir de sınıfımdan bazı kızlar.”
“OK. The football team. And some girls from my class.”
