Twelve invitations

Amir dirigia um ônibus em Toronto. Ele tinha quarenta e dois anos e veio do Irã. Ele morava com o filho, Daniel, em um apartamento pequeno.

Amir drove a bus in Toronto. He was forty-two, and he came from Iran. He lived with his son, Daniel, in a small flat.

Eram só os dois. Amir trabalhava muitas horas, mas sempre chegava em casa antes do jantar.

It was only the two of them. Amir worked long hours, but he always came home before dinner.

Em uma noite de fevereiro, ele se sentou à mesa da cozinha com doze cartões.

One evening in February, he sat at the kitchen table with twelve cards.

“Daniel, vem cá”, ele disse. “O seu aniversário é em duas semanas. Você vai fazer dez anos!”

“Daniel, come here,” he said. “Your birthday is in two weeks. You will be ten!”

Daniel saiu do quarto. Ele era um menino quieto, de olhos grandes e escuros. “Eu sei, Baba.”

Daniel came out of his room. He was a quiet boy with big dark eyes. “I know, Baba.”

“Então nós vamos fazer uma festa. Uma festa de verdade, com os seus amigos da escola. Olha, eu comprei convites.”

“So we’re going to have a party. A real party, with your friends from school. Look, I bought invitations.”

Os cartões tinham balões azuis. Amir abriu o primeiro e começou a escrever.

The cards had blue balloons on them. Amir opened the first one and started to write.

“Querido amigo, por favor venha à festa de dez anos do Daniel! Sábado, 7 de março, das duas às cinco.”

“Dear friend, please come to Daniel’s tenth birthday party! Saturday, 7 March, from two until five.”

“Onde: nossa casa, Weston Road, 15, apartamento 12. Vai ter pizza, bolo e brincadeiras. Por favor, responda para o Amir.”

“Where: our home, 15 Weston Road, flat 12. There will be pizza, cake and games. Please reply to Amir.”

Ele escreveu o número do celular embaixo. Depois, ele olhou para Daniel. “Quem você quer convidar?”

He wrote his phone number at the bottom. Then he looked at Daniel. “Who do you want to invite?”

Daniel não respondeu na hora. “Eu não sei. Talvez ninguém.”

Daniel didn’t answer at once. “I don’t know. Maybe nobody.”

“Ninguém? E os meninos do seu time de futebol? Você fala deles o tempo todo.”

“Nobody? What about the boys on your football team? You talk about them all the time.”

“Está bem. O time de futebol. E algumas meninas da minha sala.”

“OK. The football team. And some girls from my class.”
