The man in the grey coat

はいいろのコートの男の人

Sara works in a small café. The café is on a busy street in the city.

サラは小さいカフェではたらきます。カフェは町のいそがしい通りにあります。

It is seven o’clock in the morning. Sara opens the door and turns on the lights.

あさの七時です。サラはドアをあけます。でんきをつけます。

The café is quiet. Sara makes a coffee for herself. She sits at the window.

カフェはしずかです。サラはじぶんのコーヒーをつくります。まどのそばにすわります。

She has a pen in her hand. She draws on a paper napkin. She draws the street, the bus and the people.

手にはペンがあります。かみナプキンにえをかきます。通りとバスと人をかきます。

Sara loves drawing. She draws every morning. But she never shows her drawings to anybody.

サラはえが大好きです。まいあさ、かきます。でも、だれにも見せません。

At eight o’clock, the door opens. A man comes in. He has a grey coat and a big black bag.

八時にドアがあきます。男の人が入ります。はいいろのコートと大きい黒いかばんをもっています。

“Good morning,” says Sara.

「おはようございます」とサラは言います。

“Good morning,” says the man. “A black coffee, please.”

「おはようございます」と男の人は言います。「ブラックコーヒーをください」

He always says the same words. He comes every day at eight. He always wants a black coffee.

男の人はいつも同じことを言います。まい日八時に来ます。いつもブラックコーヒーをたのみます。

Sara makes the coffee. The man pays. He sits at the table in the corner.

サラはコーヒーをつくります。男の人はお金をはらいます。すみのテーブルにすわります。

He opens a book. He reads and drinks his coffee. He does not talk.

本をひらきます。本をよんで、コーヒーをのみます。話しません。

Sara looks at him. He is about thirty. He has dark hair and a kind face.

サラは男の人を見ます。男の人は三十さいくらいです。黒いかみと、やさしいかおをしています。

“The same coffee, the same table, the same book,” she thinks. She smiles.

「同じコーヒー、同じテーブル、同じ本」とサラは思います。ほほえみます。
