The man in the grey coat

Sara lavora in un piccolo bar. Il bar è in una strada trafficata della città.

Sara works in a small café. The café is on a busy street in the city.

Sono le sette del mattino. Sara apre la porta e accende le luci.

It is seven o’clock in the morning. Sara opens the door and turns on the lights.

Il bar è tranquillo. Sara prepara un caffè per sé. Si siede vicino alla finestra.

The café is quiet. Sara makes a coffee for herself. She sits at the window.

Ha una penna in mano. Disegna su un tovagliolo di carta. Disegna la strada, l’autobus e le persone.

She has a pen in her hand. She draws on a paper napkin. She draws the street, the bus and the people.

Sara ama disegnare. Disegna ogni mattina. Ma non mostra mai i suoi disegni a nessuno.

Sara loves drawing. She draws every morning. But she never shows her drawings to anybody.

Alle otto la porta si apre. Entra un uomo. Ha un cappotto grigio e una grande borsa nera.

At eight o’clock, the door opens. A man comes in. He has a grey coat and a big black bag.

«Buongiorno», dice Sara.

“Good morning,” says Sara.

«Buongiorno», dice l’uomo. «Un caffè nero, per favore».

“Good morning,” says the man. “A black coffee, please.”

Dice sempre le stesse parole. Viene ogni giorno alle otto. Vuole sempre un caffè nero.

He always says the same words. He comes every day at eight. He always wants a black coffee.

Sara prepara il caffè. L’uomo paga. Si siede al tavolo nell’angolo.

Sara makes the coffee. The man pays. He sits at the table in the corner.

Apre un libro. Legge e beve il suo caffè. Non parla.

He opens a book. He reads and drinks his coffee. He does not talk.

Sara lo guarda. Ha circa trent’anni. Ha i capelli scuri e un viso gentile.

Sara looks at him. He is about thirty. He has dark hair and a kind face.

«Lo stesso caffè, lo stesso tavolo, lo stesso libro», pensa. Sorride.

“The same coffee, the same table, the same book,” she thinks. She smiles.
