첫날밤에는 오류라고 생각했다. 둘째 날 밤에는 누군가 장난을 친다고 생각했다. 셋째 날 밤부터는 두려워지기 시작했다.

On the first night I thought it was a mistake. On the second night I thought someone was playing a joke. On the third night I started to be afraid.

하지만 처음부터 이야기하는 게 좋겠다. 내 이름은 요나스이고 스물아홉 살이다. 10월에 린데 호텔에서 야간 프런트 직원으로 일하게 되었다. 린데 호텔은 작았다. 4층 건물에 객실은 22개였고, 크로이츠베르크의 조용한 거리에 있는 오래된 건물이었다. 손님들은 대부분 돈을 아끼려는 관광객이거나 다음 날 아침 일찍 공항에 가야 하는 비즈니스맨들이었다.

But I’d better tell it from the beginning. My name is Jonas, I’m twenty-nine years old, and in October I got a job as night porter at the Hotel Linde. The Hotel Linde is small: four floors, twenty-two rooms, an old building on a quiet street in Kreuzberg. The guests are mostly tourists who don’t want to spend much money, or business people who have to get to the airport early the next morning.

어차피 밤에 잠을 잘 못 자서 이 일을 기쁘게 시작했다. 게다가 3년째 박사 학위 논문을 쓰고 있었는데, 밤에는 프런트가 아주 조용해서 일하기 좋았다. 적어도 60세 정도 되어 보이는, 짧은 회색 머리에 모든 것을 꿰뚫어 보는 듯한 눈빛을 가진 케슬러 사장님은 그렇게 말했다.

I was glad to take the job, because I don’t sleep well at night anyway. Besides, I’ve been writing my doctoral thesis for three years, and at night the reception is so quiet that you can work well. At least, that’s what the boss said, Frau Kessler, a woman of about sixty with short grey hair and a look that sees everything.

사장님은 첫날 저녁에 나에게 설명했다. “거의 아무 일도 안 일어나요. 가끔 공항에서 늦게 오는 손님이 있을 뿐이죠. 가끔 손님이 술에 취하기도 하고요. 그럴 땐 친절하게 대하고 필요하면 경찰을 부르세요. 그리고 한 가지 더, 지하실에는 내려가지 마세요. 아래에 낡은 난방기가 있는데 위험하거든요.”

“Almost nothing ever happens,” she explained to me on the first evening. “Sometimes a guest arrives late from the airport. Sometimes a guest is drunk. Then you stay friendly and call the police if necessary. And one more thing: don’t go into the basement. The old heating system is down there, and it’s dangerous.”

나는 고개를 끄덕였다. 별로 대수롭지 않게 생각했다.

I nodded. I didn’t think anything of it.

첫날밤, 정확히 2시 13분에 프런트 전화가 울렸다. 작고 초록색 화면이 달린 낡고 무거운 회색 전화기였다. 화면에는 전화를 건 객실 번호가 보였다. 거기에는 ’13’이라고 적혀 있었다.

On the first night, at exactly 2:13, the phone at reception rang. It was an old phone, grey and heavy, with a small green display. On the display I could see the number of the room the call was coming from. It said: 13.

벽에 붙은 명단을 확인했다. 11호실, 12호실, 14호실. 린데 호텔에는 13호실이 없었다. 손님들이 미신을 믿기 때문에 많은 호텔이 13호실을 만들지 않는다.

I looked at the list on the wall. Room 11, room 12, room 14. The Hotel Linde has no room 13. Many hotels don’t, because guests are superstitious.

전화는 계속 울렸다. 나는 수화기를 들었다.

The phone kept ringing. I picked up the receiver.
