Sessanta limoni
Sixty lemons
Yannis worked at the port of Piraeus for thirty-five years. He drove the big machines that moved boxes from the ships.
A giugno ha smesso di lavorare. Aveva sessant’anni ed era felice.
In June, he stopped work. He was sixty years old, and he was happy.
On his first Monday at home, he sat in the kitchen with a coffee. His wife, Eleni, read the news on her phone.
«Vuoi venire?»
“The fish is cheap at the market today,” said Eleni. “Do you want to come?”
“Yes, it’s a lovely day,” said Yannis. He drank his coffee.
«Non ho chiesto della giornata, Yannis. Ho chiesto del mercato. Il pesce costa poco oggi.»
“I didn’t ask about the day, Yannis. I asked about the market. The fish is cheap today.”
«Oh. Allora dillo chiaramente, per favore.»
“Oh. Then say it clearly, please.”
Eleni ha posato il telefono. «L’ho detto chiaramente, Yannis. Non ascolti.»
Eleni put down her phone. “I said it clearly, Yannis. You don’t listen.”
«Ascolto sempre. Tu parli al tuo caffè.»
“I always listen. You talk to your coffee.”
They went to the market together. Eleni bought the fish. Then she asked him to get six lemons.
C’erano sessanta limoni dentro.
At the market, the lemon man asked Yannis a question. Yannis didn’t hear it, so he said, “Yes.” Then he came back with a big box. There were sixty lemons in it.
«Sessanta limoni, Yannis? Che cosa faremo con sessanta limoni?»
“Sixty lemons, Yannis? What are we going to do with sixty lemons?”
«L’uomo mi ha chiesto una cosa. Ho detto di sì.»
“The man asked me something. I said yes.”
