Sessenta limões
Sixty lemons
Yannis trabalhou no porto do Pireu por trinta e cinco anos. Ele dirigia as máquinas grandes que moviam caixas dos navios.
Yannis worked at the port of Piraeus for thirty-five years. He drove the big machines that moved boxes from the ships.
Em junho, ele parou de trabalhar. Ele tinha sessenta anos e estava feliz.
In June, he stopped work. He was sixty years old, and he was happy.
A esposa dele, Eleni, lia as notícias no celular.
On his first Monday at home, he sat in the kitchen with a coffee. His wife, Eleni, read the news on her phone.
“O peixe está barato na feira hoje”, disse Eleni. “Você quer ir?”
“The fish is cheap at the market today,” said Eleni. “Do you want to come?”
“Sim, o dia está lindo”, disse Yannis. Ele tomou o café dele.
“Yes, it’s a lovely day,” said Yannis. He drank his coffee.
“Eu não perguntei sobre o dia, Yannis. Eu perguntei sobre a feira. O peixe está barato hoje.”
“I didn’t ask about the day, Yannis. I asked about the market. The fish is cheap today.”
“Ah. Então fale com clareza, por favor.”
“Oh. Then say it clearly, please.”
Eleni colocou o celular na mesa. “Eu falei com clareza, Yannis. Você não escuta.”
Eleni put down her phone. “I said it clearly, Yannis. You don’t listen.”
“Eu sempre escuto. Você fala com o seu café.”
“I always listen. You talk to your coffee.”
Eles foram para a feira juntos. Eleni comprou o peixe.
They went to the market together. Eleni bought the fish. Then she asked him to get six lemons.
At the market, the lemon man asked Yannis a question. Yannis didn’t hear it, so he said, “Yes.” Then he came back with a big box. There were sixty lemons in it.
“Sessenta limões, Yannis? O que a gente vai fazer com sessenta limões?”
“Sixty lemons, Yannis? What are we going to do with sixty lemons?”
“O homem me perguntou uma coisa. Eu disse que sim.”
“The man asked me something. I said yes.”
