Șaizeci de lămâi
Sixty lemons
Yannis a lucrat la portul Pireu timp de treizeci și cinci de ani. A condus mașinile mari care mutau cutiile de pe vapoare.
Yannis worked at the port of Piraeus for thirty-five years. He drove the big machines that moved boxes from the ships.
În iunie, a terminat munca. Avea șaizeci de ani și era fericit.
In June, he stopped work. He was sixty years old, and he was happy.
În prima lui zi de luni acasă, a stat în bucătărie cu o cafea. Soția lui, Eleni, a citit știrile pe telefon.
On his first Monday at home, he sat in the kitchen with a coffee. His wife, Eleni, read the news on her phone.
„Peștele e ieftin la piață azi”, a spus Eleni. „Vrei să vii?”
“The fish is cheap at the market today,” said Eleni. “Do you want to come?”
„Da, e o zi frumoasă”, a spus Yannis. Și-a băut cafeaua.
“Yes, it’s a lovely day,” said Yannis. He drank his coffee.
„Nu am întrebat despre vreme, Yannis. Am întrebat despre piață. Peștele e ieftin azi.”
“I didn’t ask about the day, Yannis. I asked about the market. The fish is cheap today.”
„Aha. Atunci spune clar, te rog.”
“Oh. Then say it clearly, please.”
Eleni a lăsat jos telefonul. „Am spus clar, Yannis. Nu asculți.”
Eleni put down her phone. “I said it clearly, Yannis. You don’t listen.”
„Ascult mereu. Tu vorbești cu cafeaua ta.”
“I always listen. You talk to your coffee.”
Au mers la piață împreună. Eleni a cumpărat peștele. Apoi l-a rugat să ia șase lămâi.
They went to the market together. Eleni bought the fish. Then she asked him to get six lemons.
La piață, vânzătorul de lămâi i-a pus o întrebare lui Yannis. Yannis nu a auzit-o, așa că a spus: „Da”. Apoi s-a întors cu o cutie mare. Erau șaizeci de lămâi în ea.
At the market, the lemon man asked Yannis a question. Yannis didn’t hear it, so he said, “Yes.” Then he came back with a big box. There were sixty lemons in it.
„Șaizeci de lămâi, Yannis? Ce o să facem cu șaizeci de lămâi?”
“Sixty lemons, Yannis? What are we going to do with sixty lemons?”
„Bărbatul m-a întrebat ceva. Am spus da.”
“The man asked me something. I said yes.”
