Altmış limon
Sixty lemons
Yannis, otuz beş yıl Pire limanında çalıştı. Gemilerden kutuları taşıyan büyük makineleri kullandı.
Yannis worked at the port of Piraeus for thirty-five years. He drove the big machines that moved boxes from the ships.
Haziran ayında işi bıraktı. Altmış yaşındaydı ve mutluydu.
In June, he stopped work. He was sixty years old, and he was happy.
Evdeki ilk pazartesi gününde, mutfakta bir kahveyle oturdu. Karısı Eleni, telefonundan haberleri okudu.
On his first Monday at home, he sat in the kitchen with a coffee. His wife, Eleni, read the news on her phone.
Eleni, “Bugün pazarda balık ucuz,” dedi. “Gelmek istiyor musun?”
“The fish is cheap at the market today,” said Eleni. “Do you want to come?”
Yannis, “Evet, çok güzel bir gün,” dedi. Kahvesini içti.
“Yes, it’s a lovely day,” said Yannis. He drank his coffee.
“Günü sormadım Yannis. Pazarı sordum. Bugün balık ucuz.”
“I didn’t ask about the day, Yannis. I asked about the market. The fish is cheap today.”
“Ha. O zaman lütfen açıkça söyle.”
“Oh. Then say it clearly, please.”
Eleni telefonunu bıraktı. “Açıkça söyledim Yannis. Dinlemiyorsun.”
Eleni put down her phone. “I said it clearly, Yannis. You don’t listen.”
“Her zaman dinliyorum. Sen kahvene konuşuyorsun.”
“I always listen. You talk to your coffee.”
Birlikte pazara gittiler. Eleni balığı aldı. Sonra ondan altı limon almasını istedi.
They went to the market together. Eleni bought the fish. Then she asked him to get six lemons.
Pazarda limoncu Yannis’e bir soru sordu. Yannis duymadı, bu yüzden “Evet,” dedi. Sonra büyük bir kutuyla geri geldi. İçinde altmış limon vardı.
At the market, the lemon man asked Yannis a question. Yannis didn’t hear it, so he said, “Yes.” Then he came back with a big box. There were sixty lemons in it.
“Altmış limon mu Yannis? Altmış limonla ne yapacağız?”
“Sixty lemons, Yannis? What are we going to do with sixty lemons?”
“Adam bana bir şey sordu. Evet dedim.”
“The man asked me something. I said yes.”
