Żart na liście
A joke on the list
Funmi mieszkała w Lagos. Miała czterdzieści jeden lat i była księgową. Pracowała w dużej firmie w centrum miasta.
Funmi lived in Lagos. She was forty-one, and she was an accountant. She worked for a big company in the city centre.
Siedziała przy biurku od ósmej rano do szóstej wieczorem. Lubiła liczby. Liczby były ciche.
She sat at her desk from eight in the morning until six in the evening. She liked numbers. Numbers were quiet.
W poniedziałek rano przyszedł e-mail od szefa. Funmi przeczytała go przy pierwszej kawie.
On Monday morning, an email came from the boss. Funmi read it with her first coffee.
„Drodzy pracownicy” – było tam napisane. „Nasza firma pobiegnie w biegu w Lagos. To dziesięć kilometrów i bieg jest za sześć tygodni. Oto naszych dziesięciu biegaczy”.
“Dear team,” it said. “Our company is going to run in the Lagos race. It’s ten kilometres, and it’s in six weeks. Here are our ten runners.”
Funmi spojrzała na listę nazwisk. Ostatnie nazwisko na liście to było jej nazwisko.
Funmi looked at the list of names. The last name on the list was her name.
Przeczytała je jeszcze raz. Potem wstała i podeszła do sąsiedniego biurka.
She read it again. Then she stood up and walked to the next desk.
Tunde miał dwadzieścia sześć lat. Był młodszy od wszystkich w biurze. Biegał każdego ranka i rozmawiał o tym codziennie.
Tunde was twenty-six. He was younger than everybody in the office. He ran every morning, and he talked about it every day.
„Tunde. Czy wpisałeś moje nazwisko na tę listę?”
“Tunde. Did you write my name on this list?”
Tunde zaśmiał się. „To był żart! Przepraszam. Potem szef wysłał listę do wszystkich”.
Tunde laughed. “It was a joke! I’m sorry. Then the boss sent the list to everyone.”
„Żart” – powiedziała Funmi.
“A joke,” said Funmi.
„Daj spokój, Funmi. Nigdy w życiu nie biegałaś. Prawda?”
“Come on, Funmi. You’ve never run in your life. Have you?”
„Nie” – powiedziała Funmi. „Nigdy nie biegałam. Nawet do autobusu”.
“No,” said Funmi. “I have never run. Not even for a bus.”
Inni ludzie w biurze podnieśli wzrok znad biurek. Niektórzy z nich uśmiechnęli się.
Other people in the office looked up from their desks. Some of them smiled.
