Listedeki bir şaka
A joke on the list
Funmi Lagos’ta yaşadı. Kırk bir yaşındaydı ve muhasebeciydi. Şehir merkezinde büyük bir şirkette çalıştı.
Funmi lived in Lagos. She was forty-one, and she was an accountant. She worked for a big company in the city centre.
Sabah sekizden akşam altıya kadar masasında oturdu. Sayıları sevdi. Sayılar sessizdi.
She sat at her desk from eight in the morning until six in the evening. She liked numbers. Numbers were quiet.
Pazartesi sabahı patrondan bir e-posta geldi. Funmi ilk kahvesiyle onu okudu.
On Monday morning, an email came from the boss. Funmi read it with her first coffee.
“Sevgili ekip,” dedi. “Şirketimiz Lagos yarışında koşacak. On kilometre ve altı hafta sonra. İşte bizim on koşucumuz.”
“Dear team,” it said. “Our company is going to run in the Lagos race. It’s ten kilometres, and it’s in six weeks. Here are our ten runners.”
Funmi isim listesine baktı. Listedeki son isim onun adıydı.
Funmi looked at the list of names. The last name on the list was her name.
Onu tekrar okudu. Sonra ayağa kalktı ve yan masaya yürüdü.
She read it again. Then she stood up and walked to the next desk.
Tunde yirmi altı yaşındaydı. Ofisteki herkesten daha gençti. Her sabah koştu ve her gün bundan bahsetti.
Tunde was twenty-six. He was younger than everybody in the office. He ran every morning, and he talked about it every day.
“Tunde. Benim adımı bu listeye sen mi yazdın?”
“Tunde. Did you write my name on this list?”
Tunde güldü. “Bir şakaydı! Özür dilerim. Sonra patron listeyi herkese gönderdi.”
Tunde laughed. “It was a joke! I’m sorry. Then the boss sent the list to everyone.”
“Bir şaka,” dedi Funmi.
“A joke,” said Funmi.
“Hadi ama Funmi. Hayatında hiç koşmadın. Değil mi?”
“Come on, Funmi. You’ve never run in your life. Have you?”
“Hayır,” dedi Funmi. “Hiç koşmadım. Bir otobüs için bile değil.”
“No,” said Funmi. “I have never run. Not even for a bus.”
Ofisteki diğer insanlar masalarından başlarını kaldırdı. Bazıları gülümsedi.
Other people in the office looked up from their desks. Some of them smiled.
