私はパウラです。一度、チーズを盗んだことがあります。いえ、正確には違います。スーツケースを持ってしまったのです。間違ったスーツケースを。

My name is Paula, and I once stole a cheese. Well, not exactly. I took a suitcase. The wrong suitcase.

それは3月のフランクフルト駅での出来事でした。乗っていた電車が1時間近く遅れました。私は疲れていて、お腹も空いていました。

It happened in March, at the station in Frankfurt. My train was almost an hour late. I was tired and hungry.

翌朝、大切な面接がありました。ブラント・ファインコスト社での面接です。そこはチーズやソーセージ、ワインを扱う老舗です。どうしてもそこで働きたくて、2年間ずっと応募書類を書いてきました。これが私のチャンスでした。

The next morning I had an important meeting. A job interview at Brandt Feinkost. It’s an old company for cheese, sausage and wine. I really wanted to work there. I had been writing applications for two years. This was my chance.

電車の中で、スーツケースは私の頭上にありました。グレーで小さく、キャスター付きのものです。そう思っていました。フランクフルトで急いでそれを取り、電車を降りました。

On the train my suitcase lay on the rack above me. A grey suitcase, small, with wheels. Or so I thought. In Frankfurt I grabbed it quickly and ran off the train.

ホテルでスーツケースをベッドの上に置いて開けました。そして、しばらく言葉を失いました。

At the hotel I put the suitcase on the bed and opened it. And then, for a long time, I said nothing.

服は入っていませんでした。スーツもブラウスも歯ブラシもありません。スーツケースの中にはチーズが入っていました。車のタイヤと同じくらいの大きさの、大きくて丸い黄色いチーズです。まあ、ほとんどそれくらいでした。

There were no clothes. No suit, no blouse, no toothbrush. Inside the suitcase lay a cheese. A big, round, yellow cheese, as big as a car tyre. Well, almost.

チーズの横に封筒がありました。開けてみると、お金が入っていました。大金です。数えてみると、3000ユーロありました。

Next to the cheese lay an envelope. I opened it. There was money inside. A lot of money. I counted it: three thousand euros.

そしてメモが1枚。誰かが手書きでこう書いていました。

And a note. Someone had written by hand:

土曜日の18時。彼に知られてはいけない。誰にもチーズを見せてはいけない！

Saturday, 6 p.m. He must not know anything. Nobody may see the cheese!

私はチーズを見つめました。チーズも私を見つめ返しました。まあ、チーズに目はありませんが。でも、そんな気がしたのです。

I looked at the cheese. The cheese looked at me. All right, cheese has no eyes. But that’s how it felt.

その時、スーツケースの中で電話が鳴りました。

Then something inside the suitcase started ringing.
