쥐들로 가득 찬 마을

A Town Full of Rats

1284년, 하멜른은 독일 북부의 작고 예쁜 마을이었다. 오래된 돌벽은 깊고 넓은 베저강가에 서 있었다. 대부분의 시간 동안 그곳은 살기에 즐거운 곳이었다.

In the year 1284, Hamelin was a pretty little town in the north of Germany. Its old stone walls stood beside the river Weser, which was deep and wide. Most of the time, it was a pleasant place to live.

하지만 그해 여름, 하멜른에 끔찍한 문제가 생겼다. 바로 쥐였다! 사방에 쥐들이 있었다.

But that summer, Hamelin had a terrible problem. Rats! There were rats everywhere.

쥐들은 개들과 싸우고 고양이들을 쫓아다녔다. 부엌에서는 치즈를 먹어 치우고 요리사의 숟가락에 묻은 수프를 핥았다. 심지어 남자들의 제일 좋은 일요일 모자 안에 둥지를 틀기도 했다.

They fought the dogs and chased the cats. They ate the cheese in the kitchens and licked the soup from the cooks’ spoons. They even built nests in the men’s best Sunday hats.

밤에는 침대 위로 뛰어다녔다. 낮에는 어찌나 시끄럽게 찍찍거리는지 여자들은 서로의 말소리조차 들을 수 없었다.

At night they ran over the beds. During the day they squeaked so loudly that the women couldn’t hear each other talk.

하멜른 사람들은 온갖 방법을 다 써 보았다. 고양이를 더 사고 덫을 놓고 독약을 놓았지만 아무 효과도 없었다. 매주 쥐들은 이전보다 더 늘어나는 것 같았다.

The people of Hamelin had tried everything. They had bought more cats, set traps and put out poison, but nothing had worked. Every week there seemed to be more rats than before.

마침내 사람들은 참을성을 잃었다. 화가 난 큰 무리가 시장과 시의원들이 긴 탁자에 앉아 있는 시청으로 행진했다.

At last the people lost their patience. A large, angry crowd marched to the Town Hall, where the Mayor and the council were sitting at their long table.

“우리 시장은 바보예요!” 누군가가 소리쳤다. “시의원들도 다를 바 없어요! 우리가 낸 돈으로 당신들의 좋은 털옷을 샀는데, 우리를 위해 뭘 해 주나요? 아무것도 안 하잖아요!”

“Our Mayor is a fool!” someone shouted. “And the council is no better! We pay for your fine fur robes, and what do you do for us? Nothing!”

“이 쥐들을 없앨 방법을 찾아내요.” 다른 남자가 소리쳤다. “그러지 않으면 당신들을 모두 시청에서 내쫓아 버릴 거예요!”

“Find a way to get rid of these rats,” another man shouted, “or we’ll throw you all out of the Town Hall!”

시장과 시의원들은 얼굴이 하얗게 질려 의자에서 떨었다. 그들은 어떻게 해야 할지 전혀 알지 못했다.

The Mayor and the councillors went pale and shook in their chairs. They had no idea what to do.
