“Friday is Maya’s birthday,” said Leo. “I’ve seen it on her passport. And we’re going to give her a surprise party.”

„Am Freitag hat Maya Geburtstag“, sagt Leo. „Ich hab’s in ihrem Pass gesehen. Und wir machen ihr eine Überraschungsparty.“

Sam’s voice was back, but only half of it. “Why were you looking at her passport?”

“It was on the table. It was open. Well, it was closed, and then it was open. That’s not important. Listen. Maya works every night, she’s always tired, she never has fun. She needs a party. With a cake and music and lots of people who jump out and shout ‘Surprise!’”

“Maya hates people who jump out.”

„Maya hasst Leute, die rausspringen.“

“She hates it when it’s a bad surprise. This is a good surprise.”

Leo had a plan, of course. Maya was working on Friday night, so she would come home on Saturday morning at half past seven. The party would start at seven. “A breakfast party,” said Leo. “Nobody has ever done that. We’ll be famous.”

“You always say we’ll be famous.”

„Du sagst immer, dass wir berühmt werden.“

“And one day I’ll be right.”

„Und irgendwann hab ich recht.“

Leo wrote the invitation himself and put it up in the entrance hall: SURPRISE PARTY FOR MAYA! SATURDAY 7 A.M. FOURTH FLOOR, FLAT B. BRING SOMETHING FOR BREAKFAST. SHHH!

SAMSTAG 7 UHR MORGENS. VIERTER STOCK, WOHNUNG B. BRINGT WAS ZUM FRÜHSTÜCK MIT. PSSST!

Then Sam had an idea, and before he could think about it too much, he held a sign up at the window: PARTY. SATURDAY. 7 A.M. COME?

SAMSTAG. 7 UHR MORGENS. KOMMST DU?

Across the courtyard, Nora wrote: 7 A.M.??? Then, after a moment: OK. I’LL BRING SOMETHING. I ALSO HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU.

Auf der anderen Seite vom Hof schreibt Nora: 7 UHR MORGENS??? Dann, nach einem Moment: OK. ICH BRING WAS MIT. ICH MUSS DIR AUCH WAS ZEIGEN.
