The parcel started talking at 7:02 in the morning.

Het pakket begon te praten om 7:02 uur in de ochtend.

“Wake up, Nora,” it said. A woman’s voice, soft and sad. “You promised.”

“Word wakker, Nora,” zei het. Een vrouwenstem, zacht en verdrietig. “Je hebt het beloofd.”

Sam stood in the kitchen in his socks. It was his third day in the flat. He looked at the box on the table. The box looked back. Well, not really. But it felt like that.

Sam stond op zijn sokken in de keuken. Het was zijn derde dag in de flat. Hij keek naar de doos op de tafel. De doos keek terug. Nou ja, niet echt. Maar zo voelde het wel.

“Leo?” he called. “Maya? Is anyone awake?”

“Leo?” riep hij. “Maya? Is er iemand wakker?”

A door opened. Leo came out with his hair everywhere and one eye closed.

Er ging een deur open. Leo kwam naar buiten met warrig haar en één oog dicht.

“What’s wrong? Is it a fire? Tell me it’s not a fire. I cleaned the pan yesterday. Almost.”

“Wat is er? Is er brand? Zeg alsjeblieft dat er geen brand is. Ik heb de pan gisteren schoongemaakt. Bijna.”

“It’s not a fire. It’s the parcel. It talks.”

“Er is geen brand. Het is het pakket. Het praat.”

“Parcels don’t talk, Sam.”

“Pakketten praten niet, Sam.”

“Wake up, Nora,” said the parcel. “You promised.”

“Word wakker, Nora,” zei het pakket. “Je hebt het beloofd.”

Leo opened his other eye. “Okay. That parcel talks.”

Leo deed zijn andere oog open. “Oké. Dat pakket praat.”
